Summary reflection
Finally, we are about to finish the first phase of the practicum. In the initial days of this period, I had some difficulties because of a lack of experience in terms of observing lessons and giving feedback. According to the syllabus, we were assigned to observe at least five recorded lessons (3 were given by the teacher, the other 2 lessons could be chosen by students themselves) of different teachers and give our feedback.
Let's begin with lessons which were given by our teacher. Those lessons were held by Eugene Permiakov (EFL), Andrew Drummond (Vocabulary), and Mr.A (English literacy class). While I was observing their lessons for the first time, I could not find any problem that may cause the effectiveness of lessons. Because I was like a student who was just having a lesson there. However, after watching certain minutes of the videos again and again, I started analyzing why some students can not speak during the lesson, why some students look bored or do irrelevant actions during the lesson. And I started thinking outside the box: I commenced taking layout and brightness of the room, quality of audio-visual materials that the teacher is using, periods of activities into consideration before giving my feedback to the lesson. They tried to take advantage of every factor as they can. But some of them used invisible illustrations, one of them let lots of observers enter his class by not taking the shyness of little children into account. In one of those teachers' lesson, some students acted passively because they sat on the backbenches. I would advise them to take control of these problems.
I wanted to observe lessons with weaker students in level of language, that's why, 2 lessons with absolutely different audiences were chosen. Recorded lessons which belong to Susan Rasely-Philipps (EFL-listening) and Chris Westergaard (ESL-Vocabulary) drew my attention and I started watching them. In Susan's lesson, I saw students with lower level of English. She did her best to make them understand the topic; however, some students made unpleasant actions instead of paying attention to what teacher was talking about. I concluded that, in the future, we might come across with this kind of students and we should prepare ourselves to overcome the issue which Susan faced. When it comes to Chris Westergaard, I saw future myself in him: he takes creative approach to the lessons. Besides, he taught the lesson in a fun way: funny hand-drawn illustrations and musics.
When I was a pupil of secondary school I used to evaluate teachers knowledge lowly. However, in the near past, after putting ourselves into the role of teachers, I realized that every technique or method that our teacher used was for the improvement of pupils' knowledge. Pair works and teamworks, a variety of illustrations, and grammar&vocabulary exercises which are assigned to students help students to understand the topic clearly.
To be honest, I could not be satisfied with some of my doings this semester; next time, I will do my best and try to pay attention to even small details of the lessons which I observe.
