Personalized home videos are videos recorded by individuals without the involvement of video and film production companies. Personalized home videos are a result technological advancement which has made a video production more accessible through gadgets that are inexpensive and portable such as mobile cellphones, i-pads and digital cameras. All in all the personalized home videos escape the eye of the censorship board.

Though they escape the eye of the censorship board, usually they are realistic since they are planned though others are planned. Some of the roles of personalized home videos are to create memories or save important information, for instance, recordings of funerals, parties, weddings etc. Some of the personalized home videos capture people and reality hence might be captured performing criminal activities in the scene. This has reduced the criminal rate and public indecency since people have become aware that the eyes of people might capture them in scenes. They are also a source of evidence in cases of accidents or robbery scenes occur, one may use a phone to capture what has happened so as to provide information.

These personalized home videos have also played an important role in education since many people have been given the voices to portray their geographical areas, ethnics groups and gender groups whilst in the past it was only the middle and upper class who had the money to buy the equipment which by the time was so expensive.

Personalized home videos have also opened up political space in terms of articulating views it has bought more accountability to politicians.as many corrupt politicians have been exposed through personalized home videos. For example the personalized video of Zimbabwe’s Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Dickens Madison is a political scandal about sanctions. Gaddaffi’s death is another good example of a personalized home video, it is a video clip shot by cellphone and ended up in big screens.

Demystification of sex, in the past sex was not talked about in the public but now is discussed in the public and has helped to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS. Home videos has also helped to provide history from generation to generation.

These videos have become a source of income to people since some news companies are buying videos from individuals for publication for instance the H-Metro pays a sum of $200 per juicy clip. Another example is of Philip Chiyangwa who was accused of selling recording video of the government secrets to the western government. Therefore many people believe that many people have seen the selling of personal videos as a profession and it has also created employment for others.

Advertisement is a major way of boasting the economy and its important since it helps people with up to date commodities on sale or loan. Personalized videos has helped to scale houses, second hand cars, used machines e.t.c. This is a cheap source of advertising since one uses his or her cellphone and digital camera and big profit is made.

Through a website called Youtube many people are uploading some of most entertaining stuff which are very funny and this highlights that personalized home videos have become another form of entertainment. This however creates and raises academic questions whether we can still call these videos personalized home videos, because if they find their way to the public domain then problem arises hence the term personal will no longer be valid

One might say the actual reason why people record these videos is to create memories, bring separated families together since some of them are emotional therefore arouses emotions. In an interview with a lecturer at MSU A.Rwafa says it is important for a family to watch these videos together as families so as to keep the family together.

It should also be noted that some of these home videos has led to the production of films for example “Disturbia” (2008) a movie where teenagers expose a serial killer through a home video. Other movies are backed by these home videos thereby creating a true story movie. Therefore one may say these videos provide us with firsthand information and are playing a major role to the modern world.

However some people tend to abuse the use of these videos whereby they violet the right to privacy to some people as they are used as a tool to blackmail, where people demand large sums of money in exchange of the tapes. This is a bad use since some people are robbed off their fortune by lavy gold diggers.

Some of the information that is leaked from the government is very secretive and shouldn’t be leaked since some of the information is for state security. Also if one is found to be with such videos then the person’s life is at risk because it may result to one’s mysterious disappearance, death or loss of many lives.

Sex videos have been used to destroy the career of many people. A good example is that of Wolfowits who was the World Bank president and was forced to resign because of having intercourse with a young girl. This case can also be viewed as it was blackmail by enemies or opposition.

Demystification of sex through videos have encouraged our young people to engage in sexual activities at an early stage or age. Therefore this personalized home sex videos be seen as encouraging cultural dilution and promoting anti-social behaviors and therefore increasing the spread of HIV Virus to many people.

In conclusion one can safely say that we cannot escape the use of technology and therefore the use of personalized videos but measures should be taken to respect the right to privacy. This might help to reduce the misuse or abuse of personalized home videos.
