A phrase is a group of words that has either no subject or no predicate, meaning
it cannot form a complete sentence on its own. You can have verb phrases (may
sink  in  gradually  ),  noun  phrases  (grammatical  rules  )  and  adjectival  phrases
(even the most complicated ) but until you put them all together (even the most
complicated  grammatical  rules  may  sink  in  gradually  ),  you  don’t  have  a
sentence .

Actually there are lots of other kinds of phrases, too:
Participle phrases: having to get up in the morning is the worst part of my day.
Infinitive phrases: my ambition is to retire by the time I am fifty.
Adverbial phrases: I work a long way away, so I need to leave home before my
wife.
Prepositional phrases: I would love to be able to stay in bed .
But you don’t really have to worry about these technical terms – as long as you
remember to set the alarm.
