Funeral services for Miss Ada Bell Cox, native Giles Countian, were held at 2 o’clock Sunday afternoon at Bennett-May Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Robert Hall, Cumberland Presbyterian minister. Burial took place in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Miss Cox died Saturdaynight, February 28, at a Columbia nursing home after an extended period of declining health. Miss Cox, a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, was born January 11, 1864, the daughter of the late Gourdyne Cox and Martha Mayfield Cox.

The last member of her immediate family, Miss Cox is survived byserveral nieces and nephews. Bennett-May Funeral Home in charge.

Cicero Cox, age 64, died suddenly Tuesday morning about 7:30, at his home at Bodenham. Mr. Cox was a good farmer, a genial warm hearted man. He was never married. But unlike many bachelors, he maintained his home, and lived neatly and comfortably. His surviving brother, Lon Cox, also never married. And their father, Jasper Cox, lived alone for a long time, possibly forty years after the death of their mother. One sister, Mrs. S. P. Stinnett, is married,

and lives not far from the old home where Cicero lived and died. Lon Cox lives at Tioga, Texas. Funeral services were held at Moriah Wednesday morning at 11:00 o’clock, by Rev. T. E. Hudson, for many years a friend of the family. Burial was at Moriah cemetery where repose the remains of other members of the family. There are only two survivors of the immediate family: Mrs. Stinnett of Bodenham, and the brother in Texas, who could not come for the funeral.

Pfc. Carl E. Dean, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dean, is among those included in the list of Giles County heroes who in serving their country in the present conflict, have sacrificed their lives for the principles of democracy. Born and reared in the County, he attended school at Wales and Giles County High School. At the age of 19 he volunteered for service in September, 1942, and after five months training in the United States was sent to Australia where he was stationed for a year. Transferred to New Guinea, he served his country with honor until he died on July 11, 1944, from wounds received in battle. Besides his parents, he is survived by five brothers, two of whom are in the armed forces, J. L. Dean, Coxswain, U. S. Navy, in the South Pacific area, and Harold E. Dean with the U. S. One Giles County farmer is dead and another is held in jail charged with murder, as the result of hard feelings that were said to have developed during a crap game in the Minor Hill section Sunday afternoon, according to reports of officers who investigated the affair. Jack Dean, 66, is the man who was fatally shot by a 22 caliber rifle, and Elmer Hargrove is in charged with the killing. Facts on the trouble were meager, but Sheriff Gordon Topp stated that “all information he had obtained indicated that trouble between the men was renewed at the crap game” and resulted in the shooting. A preliminary trial will be held for Hargrove sometime this week, the Sheriff stated. Dean is survived by his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Harvey Joyner, Birmingham, Ala.; Misses Ruby and Harlene Dean and Mrs. Marie Kiddy; four sons, J. G. and Carter Dean, all of Giles County; Willard and Elwood Dean, both of whom are serving with the Armed Forces of the country; a half-sister, Mrs. Laura Hazelwood, Birmingham, Ala.; five half-brothers, W. T., Harvey, Joe and Ewing Dean, all of Giles County; and Jim Dean, of Birmingham. Funeral services were conducted at 3 o’clock Sunday afternoon at Moriah Cumberland Presbyterian Church by the Rev. D. Thursday morning about 11:00 o'clock, J. H. "Jack" Dean', was struck by a locomotive pulling a north bound freight train and fatally injured, dying shortly afterward without regaining consciousness. The tragedy occurred at Hicks Cut, about one mile south of town, and, according to reports, Mr. Dean was in the cut and hidden by some vines when he suddenly stepped out on the track in front of the approaching train and so near to it that the engineer could not possibly have stopped the train in time to keep from striking the man, who stood still and received his death blow from the ponderous mass of moving iron. He was thrown some distance. The train was stopped and the injured man, who was still breathing, was put on the train which caused his death and brought to Pulaski and taken into the depot. Dr. C. A. Abernathy, railroad surgeon, was soon ministering to the dying man and ordered him removed

to his home on the Ballentine farm south of town, but he died on the way. Whether it was suicide or accident is not certain, though it might have been either, as it is said Mr. Dean has been greatly worried about his crops and land ever since the crops were ruined by the overflow of Richland Creek some weeks ago. He is said to have become practically unbalanced mentally and may have deliberately placed himself in front of the train with suicidal intent or may have been wandering about the track in a dazed condition when struck. It is said that he attempted or threatened to commit suicide with a razor that same morning at home, and that after which, he gave his wife his pocket book and left the house. Mr. Dean for many years lived in the Wales Station section. He was a quiet, inoffensive man and had been a hard worker. The Rev. G. A. Morgan conducted funeral services at the residence Saturday morning and the burial was at Mt. Moriah. Mr. Dean is survived by his wife and several children. This appeared in The Pulaki Citizen.

Obituary: The Pulaski Citizen

After an illness of several years from paralysis this well known andpopular citizen departed this life at his home in the country, and joined the hosts on the other shore. He had lived long and he had lived well. Gifted with a brilliant and expanding mind, always taking a lively interest in all affairs pertaining to the welfare and upbuilding of his community and preferring to cast his lot in life among the people, the home people, his people, he had builded a name that was honored and respected wherever he was known, and by all with whom he associated. In the medical profession, of which he was a long and prominent member, he was highly valued, and built up a large practice. It was his disposition to attend all calls within his sphere and none were too poor to obtain his services. The heart of the man beat in sympathy with suffering humanity, and he was ever willing to assist a brother when in need. Dr. Deavenport was of a literary turn of mind and during the active years of his life was a frequent contributor to the local press writing in a vivacious, interesting style. Under the pen-name of “K. N. Pepper” many articles appeared from him that were noted for the beauty of the diction and the happy, humorous vein, that caused them to be read with much interest. He was always pleasant in manner and drew to him the young people who enjoyed his association, and who valued him as a good friend. Dr. Deavenport was born in Virginia, but came here in early manhood, and had practiced his profession in this county for sixty years. Byhis brother physicians he was considered a very able man, and his advice and counsel were frequently sought and always highly valued. He was in 85^th year, and his death Friday morning at 3 a. m. closed the life of a useful good man. After services at the church at Moriah by Rev. T. E. Hudson, the body was interred with Masonic honors.
