(w/o [1]. Sam Paine [2]. John N. Carter) md 10 Feb 1880 GCT
(d/o William Neal and Harriet Apperson Paine)
In Memory of Mrs. Martha J. Carter.
Mrs. Carter was born Sept. 24, 1832, and died Nov. 4, 1895. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Neal, and was married first to Mr. Sam Paine, who died, and after several years of widowhood she was married to Mr. J. N. Carter. She left one child, a daughter, by Mr. Paine, and to her and other sorrowing friends and relatives we extend our sympathy. The black camel, death, kneeleth once at each door and a mortal must mount to return here no more, she has fought a good fight of faith and gone to shine before the throne of God in heaven. She had been suffering for a year with a cancer on her breast. Her brother, Dr. Neal, advised her to have the cancer removed bya surgical operation. Dr. Briggs, ofNashville, came down and performed the operation, which she bore with patient resignation, getting upon the operating table and lying down calmly and quietly without a tremble to pass through the perilous ordeal. The operation was apparentlysuccessful, the wound healing nicely, and her loved ones were inspired with hope, but it was only for a short while, the cancer broke out again and she gradually grew worse until death came to her relief. Her devoted and stricken husband, dutiful and loving daughter, constant and faithful sisters, loyal and sympathetic brothers were constantly at her bedside—doing all in their power to alleviate her pain and cheer her. She was truly a good woman and all that knew her loved her. It was pleasant to visit her, her welcome was unaffected, genial, and cordial; her conversation sparkled with pleasantry. She was kind to everybody and bore her sufferings with patience and Christian resignation. Her personal appearance was always agreeable and graceful. The high elements of her nature were so fully developed that all who knew her had the most implicit confidence in her. She was not demonstrative in her religious life, but firm in her devotion to God and his church, preferring that her life should speak the emotions of her heart. She was amiable and sweet in her disposition and a loving companion to her tender husband, a loving mother to her children. She
was a good neighbor and firm friend, always calm and reasonable. When her brother, Mr. Andrew Neal, died so suddenly near her bed where she had sat with her husband so many days and nights, she was not in the least excited, but bade her daughter to be quiet, the he was better off. She was a consistent member of the Christian Church at Rural Hill. She was buried at Mt. Moriah. Bros. Hudson and Compton conducted the funeral services. To the bereaved, grief stricken daughter and many sad relatives and friends will say be faithful for will soon join her on the happy shore where partings are no more. One That Loved Her.
