Funeral services for Mrs. Iva Elizabeth York Shook, 72, widow of Tom Shook, were held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at Mt. Moriah Cumberland Presbyterian Church of which she was a member. Rites were conducted by the Rev. Robert H. Hall and burial took place in the family lot in the church cemetery. Mrs. Shook was found dead in bed on Tuesday morning, April 1, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mitchell Wright in Pulaski where she had been making her home. She had been in declining health for several months. Born October 7, 1885, in Giles County, she was the daughter of the late John S. York and Tennie Tomerlin York. Her husband, Tom Shook, died in October of 1949. In addition to Mrs. Wright, Mrs. Shook is survivedbytwo other daughters, Mrs. R. C. Braly, Weakley Creek, Giles County, and Mrs. M. A. Inman, Verbena, Ala.; one son, John Shook, Waverly; and ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Claude York, Madison. Bennett-May and Company, Funeral Directors in charge.

Funeral services for Mrs. Maude Helen Prince Shook, 73, Giles County resident, were held at 2:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon at Bennett-May Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. W. Floyd Cates, pastor of First Baptist Church. Burial took place in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Mrs. Shook died on Friday, June 15, at the home of her daughter, Miss Ruth Shook in Chattanooga. Born August 22, 1888, in Giles County, she was the daughter of the late Gideon Prince and Mary Appleton. Her husband, Jack Shook, died a number of years ago. In addition to the daughter, Mrs. Shook is survived by one son, W. M. Shook, Saleshala, Mass.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Lillian Vestal, Dayton, Ohio; and one brother, Claude Prince, Minor Hill. J. Lee Shores, 73, retired Giles County merchant and a leading citizen of the Bodenham community, died at 7:30 o’clock Mondaynight at the Lawrence sanitorium after several weeks’ illness. Funeral services were held at two o’clock Tuesday afternoon at Moriah Cumberland Presbyterian Church by the Rev. James Elder, the Rev. J. B. Burns and the Rev. Russell Boaz. Burial took place in the church cemetery. The son of John and Sara Ann Pittard Shores, he was born in Giles Countyand had spent most of his life in the Bodenham area where he had engaged in the mercantile business for more than thirty-five years. Active in church and civic affairs, Mr. Shores was a leading member and an elder in the Moriah Church, and served as a director of community projects and as a member of the County Equalization Board and the important Highway Rights-of-way committee for many years. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Lura Reed Shores; a sister, Mrs. R. D. Johnson of Birmingham, Ala.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Lura Reed Shores, 70, resident of the Bodenham community, died Sunday, August 29, at Giles County Hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning at Mt. Moriah Cumberland Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. J. C. Elder, and burial followed in the family lot in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Born May 31, 1884, she was the daughter of the late Thomas N. Reed and Alice Tidwell Reed, early residents of the Bnham community. She was a member of Mt. Moriah Cumberland Presbyterian Church which was founded by that community, including her family, more than a hundred years ago. She was the wife of J. Lee Shores, merchant of that community, who died several years ago. Mrs. Shores is survivedbya sister, Mrs. G. C. Mrs. Virginia Pittard Shores, 66, owner of The Vogue, ladies quality dress shop on the East Side of the Public Square, died unexpectedly at 12:30 (noon) Thursday, March 10, in Giles County Hospital, following surgery. Funeral services were held at 3 o’clock Friday afternoon in the chapel of Bennett-May Funeral Home, with the rites conducted by the Rev. Robert Neal Dean, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Pulaski, and the Rev. Mack Pinkelton, Baptist minister. Burial took place in the family lot in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Born August 12, 1909, in Giles County, she was the daughter of the late Albert G. Pittard and Minnie Zuccarello Pittard. She was a member of the Moriah Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Shores had been in the merchandising business for many years, buying The Vogue several years ago. Her husband, Robert Clyde Shores, Bodenham merchant, died in 1925. Mrs. Shores is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marlin Goodman, Mrs. Carroll Wesson and Mrs. Hoyt Morrow, all of Pulaski; three grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Guy Chambers, Pulaski.

Elvin Smith, 60, died Saturday morning at the Pulaski Hospital, after a short illness. But he had not been in robust health for several years. Mr. Smith was a candidate for Circuit Court Clerk, in two different elections in recent years, and made a creditable race each time. When early returns came in it looked like he was a winner. But when returns from the big districts came in he was nosed out by small majorities, each time. He was a man of quiet, unassuming disposition, who made friends, and retained the friendship of those who knew him. Funeral services were held at Bennett, May and Company Funeral Home, Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock, Rev. BillyMarshall ofNashville, andRev. S. R. Bratcher of Pulaski, officiating. Burial was at Moriah where members of Mrs. Smith’s family are buried. In addition to Mrs. Smith, Mr. Smith is survived by one son, Dorris Smith of Birmingham, and six half brothers.

At his residence in Pulaski, on last Saturday morning, the 12th of consumption, James Felix Smith, Esq., aged nearly 51 years. Mr. Smith was a resident of this county for forty odd years, having been born at Mt. Pleasant, Maury County, Tenn., Sept. 20th, 1824, and moved from there with his father to his place on Pigeon Roost Creek when a child. He was married to Miss Martha V. Wilkes in 1848 by Rev. C. P. Reed, and lived until 1873 upon his farm three miles west of town. He professed religion under Mr. Reed’s ministry about 25 years ago at Moriah, and he was elder in that church for many years, until he moved to Pulaski, when he registered his membership with the C. P. Church at this place and was an elder in this congregation until his death. His remains were interred at Moriah last Sunday.

Funeral services for Walter Stafford, 79, retired Giles County farmer who was found dead at his home in the Choate’s Creek communityMonday afternoon, Jan. 18, were held Wednesday at Bennett-May Funeral Home. The Rev. Horace Woodard officiated and burial was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. Stafford lived alone and was last seen by neighbors on Friday of last week. About 2 p. m. Monday a friend, Daniel Rogers, went to the house and found it locked. He notified law enforcement authorities and State Trooper James Dyer went to the scene. Stafford was found dead in bed, and Trooper Dyer said that he apparently died of natural causes, probably Friday night. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. E. T. Reed of Pulaski.

James Steven Strickland, 37, of Watertown, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997, in Nashville. The Giles County native was the son of Calvin and Sue Word Strickland of Pulaski. He was a Harley-Davidson technician for C & S Harley-Davidson. Services will be at 2 p. m. tomorrow (Friday) at the Carr and Erwin Chapel with G. C. Fox officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife, Melissa Lipham Strickland of Watertown; three brothers, Dwayne Strickland of Columbia, Jeff Strickland of Pulaski and Tim Strickland of LaVergne; and grandmothers, Martha Strickland of Pulaski and Charlotte Edde of Lewisburg.
