- In this system a monarch (king or queen) makes the decisions for all of the people
- The position of monarch is usually inherited, which means passed down within one family
Monarchy – is a governing system in which one person rules, usually a king or queen
- In 1215, the King of England, King John, signed the Magna Carta
- The Magna Carta listed the rights of England’s Upper Class and limited the power of the monarchy
- Today England still has a monarchy but the monarch’s authority is limited
- England also has a democracy with elected leaders called Parliament
- England’s government is called a constitutional monarchy
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, with a queen and a parliament that has two houses: the House of Lords, with 574 life peers, 92 hereditary peers, and 26 bishops; and the House of Commons, which has 651 popularly elected members.
Dictatorship – a governing system in which one person seizes complete control
by force
- The difference between a monarchy and a dictatorship is that dictators do not inherit their authority, they claim it by force, usually by violent means
- Dictators usually rule until they die or are overthrown

- The government is run by a holy person or priest that uses the religious book of their religion to make decisions for the people
