Theme: Giving feedback in writing
Aim:
to raise awareness of importance of assessment and assessment criteria '
to discuss current practices of assessing students’ writing
to give feedback on samples of students’ writing
Objectives:
Lead-in
Time: 10 min

  • Tell students to remember themselves as students and ask them to answer the following questions:

    • How often did you have to do writing assignments when you were a student?

    • How were they marked? (e.g. 1-5, 0-100%, all mistakes corrected in red ink, comments, like Well-done or Poor etc)

    • How did you feel when you got your marked writings back?

    • How useful were the marked writings to you as a student

    • How often do you have to mark your students’ writing now?

    • How useful do you think your assessment is to your students?

    • Who taught you how to mark students’ writing?

    • Do you think that teachers at your workplace assess students’ work like you do?

  • Tell students that in the previous sessions on teaching writing you dealt with both teachers’ and students perspectives on writing. This session is not going to be an exception as well though it is going to be about assessment and giving feedback on students’ writing.
