On November 23 and 24, at 8 p.m., Festival “Diaghilev. P.S.” presents a new production by the French choreographer Angelin Preljokaj — “The Nights” in the Alexandrinsky theater. In October, 2011 within the frames of the Festival “Diaghilev. P.S.” appearance of the Angelin Preljokaj’s Company performing the ballet “The Snow White” was hailed with long applause.
This year the Festival gives the citizens a chance to meet a new creation of the choreographer – ballet “The Nights” also based on fairytale tune. Main source of inspiration for Angelin Preljocaj this time was “1000 and 1Night”.
The stage team is remarkable as always:
music: Natasha Atlas and Sami Bishai, 79D
costumes: Azzedine Alaia
scenography: Constance Guisset
light: Sessile Giovancili-Visser Alexandrinskytheater (2, Ostrovsky square)

On November 24 photo-exhibition “The Russian Los-Angeles. Igor Stravinsky. Innovation and Dance” will be opended in the Museum of Theater and Music. On November 25, in Mikhailovsky Theater the Bavarian National Ballet (Germany) presents a famous one-act ballet “The Gods and Dogs” by an outstanding choreographer Jiří Kylián. Initially, the ballet was staged for NDT Company in 2008, to the music by F-minor Beethoven string quartet, whimsically combined with avant-garde tunes by Dirk Haubrich. This 30-minute ballet, violent and psychologically convincing, is incredibly impressing.
This night also one-act ballets by Nacho Duato will be performed.
Mikhailovsky Theater (1, Square of Arts)
7 p.m.
On November 27-28, in Mikhailovsky Theater, the Festival “Diaghilev. P.S.” presents the one-act ballet nights performed by the company of the Norwegian National Ballet (Oslo).
In the program there are two ballets by Jiří Kylián. The St Petersburg audience will meet with unique ballet lexts created by the Czech choreograph. Paying a tribute to the postulates of classic ballet, Kylián surprisingly combines them with freedom of modern dance, at the same time preserving sense of humor inhering in him.
“Wings of Wax”. Choreography by Jiří Kylián to the music by the 20th century composers – John Cage, Philip Glass, and the 17th century composers – Johann Sebastian Bach and Heinrich von Biber.
“Soldiers mass”.Choreography by Jiří Kylián to the music by Boguslav Martinu composed in 1939 in memory of the battalion of young Czech soldiers fallen in the very first battle in France during the First World war.
Light lyric ballet “Suite” by the young Norwegian choreographer Jo Stromgren is penetrated with romanticism of first love. The author’s choreographic language adherent to the traditions of neoclassicism resonates with the themes of “The Dance in the Party” by Gerome Robbins.

The Festival was founded in the year of the 100th anniversary of Sergei Diaghilev’s Les SaisonsRusses in St Petersburg, which had given to the great impresario of the XX century the initial start and inspiration. The mission of the festival is to continue the line of Sergei Diaghilev and facilitate the cultural exchange of all new ideas in the arts between Russia and the rest of the world. During the 4 years since then the Festival has become one of the major cultural events in the city. It has brought to St Petersburg tours of the best contemporary dance companies –the Hamburg Ballet of John Neumeier with his premiere production of “Le Pavilion d’Armide”, his masterpiece “Le Sacre du printemps” and others, tour of the Aix-en-Provence company of Angelin Preljokaj with the Russian premiere of his ballet “The Snow White”, The Bolshoi Ballet of Russia, orchestra of Perm opera and ballet theatre under maestro Theodor Kurentzis. The exhibitions of the Festival at the State Hermitage Museum, the State Russian Museum and State Museum of Ethnography discovered for the citizens some masterpieces from the leading international museums of the world. In the year of Russian-Italian cultural cooperation (2011) the festival presented in Rome for the Roman carnival concert “RUSSIAN MASLENITSA” and exhibition “RUSSIAN WINTER” showing Russian traditions to Italians – just to name but a few major achievements of the Festival.
In 2011 the Festival has established award “ETONNE MOI!” for an original artistic project bringing together international cultures. The first winner of the award was director of the Chekhov Festival in Moscow Valery Shadrin. In 2012 it was given to John Neumeier.
In 2012, the Festival’s program was devoted to the jubilee of the greatest contemporary choreographer, the founder of the company “Hamburg ballet” - John Neumeier, who became the second winner of the award “ETONNE MOI!”. At the Gala-concert “Neumeier without Borders” fragments of the famous master’s ballets performed on the best world stages were shown. In Saint Petersburg they were performed by outstanding premier dancers of the leading ballet companies of the world – Roberto Bolle (ABT New York and La Scala), Julia Kent (ABT New York), and Hamburg ballet principal dancers Hélène Bouchet, Anna Polikarpova, Lloyd Riggins, Alexander Ryabko, Ivan Urban, and others.
The exhibition “Vaslav Nijinsky and John Neumeier”, for the first time in Russia presented unique collection of graphical materials about Vaslav Nijinsky from John Neumeier’s private collection. The guests could see the portraits of the igneous dancer by Amedeo Modigliani, Gustav Klimt, Jean Cocteau and drawings by Nijinsky himself.
