(2002) examined the problem of regional imbalances in
Karnataka in terms of 35 economic and social indicators across 175 taluks in the state.
The report has also ranked the taluks on the basis of Comprehensive Composite
Development Index (CCDI). Accordingly 144 taluks in the state have been identified as
backward taluks of whom 39 taluks have been identified as most backward taluks in the
state. The composite index of social infrastructure is used to assess regional imbalance
in development. Health and education indices are used to capture the overall picture of
regional imbalance. In a way it is an aggregate approach to the assessment of
development distance.
