9. Transport for sustainable development: The current situation and 
the way forward 
9.1 Verdict: The current situation 
Transport  is  important  for  sustainable  development.  The  past  chapters  have  shown  that 
transport can improve sustainability by ensuring social inclusion of marginalized groups and 
promote  economic  development.  However  the  chapters  have  also  shown  that  there  are 
many  remaining  challenges  that  need  to  be  addressed.  The  ECE  region  covers  a  huge 
variation  in  economic  development,  geographical  and  demographic  characteristics.  The 
following verdict is an attempt to give an overall judgment of the current situation. Due to 
the great differences there are exceptions for every aspect. But all countries should continue 
to work for improvement of all aspects. If countries are doing well it is important to share its 
good practices and ideas, if a country is performing poorly it is important to learn from other 
nations.      Sustainable  development  is  a  global  issue  and  intergovernmental  cooperation  is 
therefore crucial.
