ABSTRACT
Tourism has developed dramatically in China’s drive to modernize. However, modern development has
adversely thinned the Chinese culture and diluted the cultural identity in tourism. This study examined the thinning
effects of tourism development on culture and the scope of such effects in China. It postulated that tourism policy
should be coordinated with the interests of key stakeholders to balance modernization and the conservation of
cultural authenticity. Through the case of Beijing
Hutong
, this study proposed a model of strategic alliance of
stakeholders from both public and private sectors and dictated their motives and roles in cultural tourism
development.
