Functions of Research Institutes for Communicable Diseases in the USA
The US Department of Health formulates primary policies to control infectious
diseases, but the health care measures of one state differ from those of another,
including the constitution of the laws. For this reason, each state government refers
to the federal regulations as the guidelines and formulates infectious disease prevention
policies that characterize the particularities of each region.
The organizational components of the Department of Health and Human Services
mainly consist of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which are
responsible for preventing and controlling diseases, injuries, and disability; the Food
and Drug Administration (FDA), which is responsible for assuring the safety of food
and medicines; and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which conduct research
related to public health (see Figure 2.2).
