Название публикации: «BENEFITS OF INFLUENCING AND ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO READ»

Annotation: The article deals with the issues related to the motivativation and influence to read in the student environment, its features in the light of modern information technologies. Based on the materials of applied educational research, the ratio between electronic and classical book versions of the media is determined as a prime factor in encouraging students to the reading. The pace and volume of reading are presented, and the reading preferences of students are revealed.
Keywords: reading, information technology, student youth, reading preferences, pace, volume of reading.

Today, reading is characterized as a complex human act of a linguistic, physiological, psychological and social nature. The French historian and social philosopher Michel de Certeau observes that "reading is only one but the most fundamental aspect of consumption. The main thing here is not to succumb to the illusion that the book changes a person, on the contrary, it is the reader who adapts the work to his world, and in this sense, "we should not hold people for idiots". The author characterizes the practices of mass media consumption as "the occupation of sheep".

With the emergence of virtual information space, a different culture is emerging, characterized by fragmented perception, visualization, and ever-growing volumes of information. Even M. McLuhan, considering printing as an instrument of change in the transmission of information, saw the future in the book world, removing from architecture the function of preservation and transmission of information, extending the capabilities of the elite to the entire society. Today we are already talking about the transformation of book culture. On the one hand, researchers note a decline in interest in reading, drawing attention to the fact that from the circle of readers' preferences began to leave great literary forms, on the other hand, the number of book fairs,
presenting new literature, and a significant number of visitors to them indicates the opposite.
Young people are paying a lot of attention to modern literature, which is probably one of the consequences of successful screen versions of works. One of the most popular reading trends has been books on self-development, on the path to success.
Sometimes it comes down to trivial reading of a new social media feed or blog. The results of sociological research conducted among university students characterize reading needs as developmental, but with certain reservations: the absence of socio-political literature among book preferences and the loss of taste for "slow
reading".
Reading as pleasure, as empathy is giving way to reading as information gathering. Rethinking the phenomenon of reading is explained by the need to be able to read at a sufficiently high level of meaning due to the ever-increasing information flows and the increasingly complex search for useful and reliable information.
The reading preferences of students, the main features and motives of reading of modern students were studied at the college site. As a method of collecting information the survey in the form of electronic questionnaire using Google - form was applied. In this case there is no possibility to control/ensure the representativeness of the sample, but, nevertheless, it is possible to understand the general trends of the active part of students (those who agreed to be surveyed in this way). Among the respondents who participated in the survey 48% were senior students.
The results showed that reading is a meaningful, popular activity among students (92% of respondents identified reading books as a form of leisure time, of which 32% read with a frequency of 1-3 times a week and 23% read daily).
Students cite personal or cognitive interest as the main reason for reading (32%). The most rarely cited reason for reading books is boredom. The volume of works mostly does not affect the readers in any way if the book managed to interest them or if young people know that the book will be useful to them in any case.
It is noteworthy that students prefer to read on electronic media about once a month, while, in general, they turn to reading several times a week. It can be assumed that reading on electronic media is driven by the need or inability to pick up a paper book. Among those who, in one way or another, turn to electronic media, 77% most often use a mobile phone for this purpose. In the opinion of students, the gadget is convenient to use because it is always with you and you can store almost an unlimited number of works. Respondents note that it is convenient to read from the phone. That said, there is a difference between what students read on their phones and what types or genres of books they turn to only on paper media. Thus, on mobile devices most (21%) read self-development books, a little less share of those (16%) who use a device to read educational literature. Analysis of students' preferences in the choice of media showed that more than half gave their choice to literature, which they prefer to read on paper.
Pragmatism comes to the forefront of book reading. More than half of the respondents (54%) will not read a book if it is not of any practical use.
The accessibility of the work is an important factor. Thus, a student will prefer to read the work if it is available at home or freely accessible on the Internet.
Less frequently (13%), respondents would pick up a book if they had to go to the library. Despite the bias towards only the usefulness of books, respondents would prefer to read a work in its entirety rather than in fragments, even in the case of a large volume of books, than to look for something most useful in it. Thus, the attitude towards fragmentary reading in youths is not supported by the findings. Students are highly likely to re-read a text if they do not suddenly understand its meaning the first time, which indicates that they are thoughtful and interested in working with the source.
We can observe a shift in the focus of students' reading preferences, namely not only what to read, but also in which medium to do it, which indicates the convenience of electronic media and a more serious attitude towards the traditional way of reading.
Dependence of the frequency of reading on the availability of free time (58% of those who read 1-3 times a week or more often), on the walking distance from the source (only what can be found at home or on the Internet, in a pinch - to buy). Probably
this allows us to speak about the loss of popularity of libraries, considered as a resource or a place for reading. However, libraries are rather quick to respond to this, transforming themselves into co-working spaces.
Reading among students showed the presence of similar reading trends among young people, for example, in the features of reading preferences: interest in fantasy and adventure genres. According to the findings, students prefer to read literature in hard copy so as not to lose the emotional connection. The widespread opinion about the fragmentation of youth reading was not confirmed in the present study.
Interestingly, many of the data fall within the trends of the results of sociological research on reading in the student environment, despite the rather significant time intervals. This is probably due to the peculiarities of the environment that forms the intellectual potential of the students. At the same time, reading remains an indisputable component of the formation of both intellectual and general cultural capital .
