Abstract: A lesson plan is a written guide showing the procedure of a lesson from introduction to 
assessment. Some of the most basic components of a good lesson plan are objectives, activities and 
assessment and lesson plans are an aid to contribute to success of teaching, at the same time 
learning. This article discusses the importance of lesson planning and strategies to develop a good 
one.
Key words:
Alongside many contributing factors, lesson planning is one of the factors that determine successful 
classrooms. A lesson plan is a detailed description of conducting a lesson in a particular way. Lesson 
plans may differ according to a teacher’s teaching philosophy, interests and needs of target audience, 
and of course, the subject that is being covered. Among the most basic components of a lesson plan, 
objectives set by a teacher, activities and assessment should be entailed. In some educational 
institutions, teachers or instructors should follow a certain criterion to develop a lesson plan and some 
stages are mandatory to be included, but some institutions allow teachers to create lesson plans that 
best suit for needs and interests of the students. Though lesson plans are considered to a be a road 
map of teachers, they are not necessarily followed fully by teachers in some cases due to some 
preliminary facts. Creating an effective lesson plan requires a teacher lesson planning competence as

Houston and Beech, 2002 suggested that lesson planning is a key element of teaching process. Among 
other discussions on the importance of a lesson plan, it is widely accepted that lesson plans are of 
high importance as they determine whether the way of teaching has become successful or not giving 
a way to make improvement to the process (Grossman, Wineburg, and Woolworth 2001; Little 1987; 
Putnam and Borko 2000; Wang and Paine 2003 in Shen and Poppink (2007). On the other hand, 
Richards and Bohlke, 2011 argued that experienced teachers do not always rely on a detailed lesson 
plan contrary to novice teachers who carry out every step according a pre-prepared plan with slight 
adaptation to teaching environment. D. Monett and T. Weishaar (2015) suggested that “A lesson plan

(LP) is a step-by-step guide on how to systematically approach a learning session. Its major goal is 
to structure a lesson (or a unit of learning or a piece of instruction) in order to teach concepts or 
specific skills or to give learners the opportunity to discover information on their own or with their 
peers”. They further stated that there are many advantages of designing lesson plans, especially for 
substitute teachers who are occasionally responsible for a class to prepare better and organize lessons 
instructionally.
Teacher’s success in class is determined by implementing creative methods while teaching, building 
meaningful communication between a teacher and a learner and of course, the level of subject mastery 
of students (Coe, Aloisi, Higgins and Major, 2014; Rodriguez and Abocejo, 2018; Abocejo and 
Padua, 2010). Wallace, et al., 2008 suggested that theoretical knowledge on teaching does not 
necessarily mean successful practice because of possible theory-practice gap and there is a huge 
discrepancy between theoretical mastery and successful implementation of it into practice together 
with feedback by experts which is very essential. According to Bates, 2016, a good lesson plan 
mechanically does not mean it is a good lesson, but it is a critical part of the whole process.
Tomlinson, 2000 claimed that making adjustment according to students’ needs and interests should 
be carried out by a teacher rather than applying the same style or the method to all students who are 
possibly in different levels of learning.
Studies and researches show that identifying students’ goals in advance of creating a lesson plan is 
critical in lesson planning process since it allows a teacher to make sure how well students have 
mastered the subject (Stiggins, 2008).
Among the stages that should be carefully designed by a teacher, assessment brings about difficulties 
while selecting methods for evaluation and assessment. Some teachers deliberately apply the same 
methods of assessing that they have been using (Wiggins, 2005). McTighe, 2011, in its turn, suggested
