STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVING READING BOOKS

Annotation: This article discusses the importance of reading books and benefits for pupils.
In this paper there are given important strategies for improving independent reading and kind 
of activities. 
Key words: independent reading, strategies, self-confidence, knowledge
Reading books are very important. Reading has a number of benefits including improving 
your memory, enlarge your knowledge, helping you new things and improve thinking ability. 
The importance of reading books helps us learn and understand the world. Some may believe 
that reading takes too much time effort. In the world today where information are abundant, 
reading books is one of the best ways to be informed. However, reading can greatly enhance 
your life experience, and there are ways to make it even more enjoyable, whether you do it 
frequently or just for school or work assignments. As George R.R Martin. Author of the Game 
of Thrones books, once “A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies…The man who never 
reads lives only one.” 
In nowadays our president Sh. Mirzyoyev deeply pays attention reading books and importance 
of libraries. Every year “Yosh Kitobxon “competition takes place between school pupils. That’s 
why in our country libraries are being provided different kinds of books, journals and newspapers 
which are useful for pupils.
A number of studies show that promoting reading can a have big impact on pupils and adults 
and their future. Researchers Clark and Rumbold ( 2006) identify several main areas of the benefits 
to reading: develop thinking skills, text comprehension and some grammar structures,enlarge 
vocabulary,develop self-confidence,improve general knowledge,a better understanding of other 
cultures,community participation,pleasure in reading in later life,a greater insight into human 
nature, making decisions
Strategies for improving independent reading.
Many researchers explored what kind of activities to promote reading and found out some 
possible ways to improve independent reading.
1. Create an environment.
That’s means to provide enough resources and books which they are motivated to read at any 
time. If in our libraries are full of different and colorful books pupils are interested in reading 
and going to library. We should organize activities to promote reading habits in their free time. 
The Activities included: marked improvements in reading environments, read aloud, book talk 
and book recommendations and the provision of quality time for independent reading. The 
teachers involved in appreciating the significance of the wider range of reading which young 
people experience in their homes and communities. Shared understanding is established between 
teachers, and families about the changing nature of reading and everyday reading practices which 
supported reading. Reading is also found to be strongly influenced by relationships, between 
teachers and children; between children and families: between children, teacher, families and 
communities.
2. Choice.
An important factor in developing reading book is choice. When children were asked which 
book they had enjoyed most 80% of them said that the one they had enjoyed most was the one 
they had chosen themselves. Choice and interest are highly related and often conflated: children 
are more likely to choose books that look interesting to them. But to affect reading behavior, 
children have to go beyond simply choosing a book, and must subsequently choose to read that 
book, over any other available activity.
3. Performing tasks.
By giving any some tasks or questions from any kind of book especially literary book. It 
helps them try to find these books themselves and read with interest in order to fulfill the tasks.

Another example is “ Rooted in reading “ which is reading promotion project offering primary 
and secondary school students suite of 12 reading ‘ passports’ to encourage reading in Britain. 
It covers a whole range of ages from children learning to read through sixth form students. After 
reading a book, children compete an entry that takes the form of a short review in their passport.
The student, teacher, school or public librarian can then stamp their passport with the project’s 
tree loge to endorse their reading.
4. Role of parents and home environment. 
Evidence suggests that parents and the home environment and are essential to the early 
teaching of reading and fostering a love of reading. Parental involvement in child’s literacy has 
been reported as a more powerful force than other family background such as social class, family 
size and level of parental education. Parents play the main role to interest the children’s life and 
making them to motivate intrinsically. Children are more likely to continue to readers in homes 
where books and reading are valued. ( Baker and Scher ( 2002).
