Chapter 4: Supportive Communication 
Communication that is efficient has three key characteristics: accuracy (what the author means is 
what the recipient receives), support (communication improves the connection between the 
transmitter and the recipient), and right timing (when communication comes, the recipient can utilize 
the information.). Managers must undoubtedly enhance their communication abilities; but, they must 
also select whether to communicate via counseling or coaching. 
Coaching –– providing advice instruction, or knowledge to increase productivity. "I can assist you 
in doing something effectively." 
Counseling –– assisting someone in comprehending and resolving an issue by demonstrating 
understanding. "I can assist you in recognizing that an issue occurs." 
Complacency
• Noninquisitiveness 
based on the refusal 
to ask questions.
• The bias toward 
physical activity 
rather than mental 
effort that results 
from nonthinking.
Compression
• Differentiating 
between a person 
and the background 
based on not 
eliminating 
unnecessary 
information or 
locating important 
information

Commitment
