Archaeological investigations of defensive works of ancient Chorasmia
1.1 Questions regarding the history of ancient Chorasmia
The Chorasmian oasis is one of the ancient regions of Central Asia requiring irrigation since annual precipitation is low; the bulk of water comes from the Amu-dar’ya (classical Oxus). The ‘land of ancient irrigation’ on the right and left banks of the Oxus together with other oases formerly consisted of a single historical-cultural and geographical region, that is to say, ancient Chorasmia (P’yankov 1972).
In historical social origins there are scanty hints regarding society of Central Asia and unification in terms of statehood before Achaemenid times and the notion of a ‘Greater Chorasmia’ as well as an ‘Ancient Bactrian kingdom’ are problematical (Tolstov 1948a: 44-45; Gafurov 1972: 59-60; see also Preface, p. 7-19). It has also been supposed that Margiana as well had its own king up to the Achaemenid conquest (Prashek 1906-1910: 51-54). Hecataeus of Miletus (about 500 B.C.), for instance, mentions that some Chorasmians lived in cities to the east of Parthia (P’yankov 1972: 10-11). Later Herodotus, writing in the mid to late 5th century B.C., informs us that there was a plain in Asia: “ ... surrounded by a ring of hills, which are broken by clefts in five separate places. This tract of land used to belong to the Chorasmians and lies on the boundaries of five different tribes: the Chorasmians themselves, the Hyrcanians, the Parthians, the Sarangians, and the Thamanaeans; but ever since the Persian rise to power it has been the property of the Persian king. In the ring of hills a considerable river rises - the Aces - which used to supply water to the five tribes I have mentioned, being split into five channels and flowing out to each of them through a different gorge; now, however, that the Persians are masters of the country, all these people find themselves in a serious difficulty, for the king has blocked up the gorges and constructed sluice-gates to contain the flow of water, so that what used to be a plain has now become a large lake, the river flowing in as before but no longer having any means of egress. The result of this for the people who depended upon the use of the water, but are now deprived of it, has been disastrous. In winter, to be sure, they get rain like anyone else, but they need the river water when they are sowing their millet and sesame in the summer.

Xorezm oazisi Oraylıq Aziyanıń áyyemgi suwǵarma zonalarınıń biri, jıllıq jawıngershilik kem bolǵanlıǵı sebebli jasalma suwǵarıwdı talap etedi, suwdıń tiykarǵı bólegi Ámiwdáryadan (klassik Oks) keledi. Okstıń oń hám shep jaǵasındaǵı «áyyemgi suwǵarıw mámleketi» basqa oazisler menen birgelikte birden-bir tarıyxıy-mádeniy hám geografiyalıq regionnan, yaǵnıy Áyyemgi Xorezmnen ıbarat edi (Pyankov, 1972, 46). Geradottıń miynetinde de bul atap ótiledi.

Tariyxıy social kelip shıǵıwda Orta Aziya hám Ahamoniyler dáwirinen aldıńǵı «Úlken Xorezm» mámleketshiligi kóz qarası hám «Áyyemgi Baqtriya mámeleketi» túsinikleri ilimiy jaqtan mashsqalalı másele esaplanadı (Tolstov, 1948a, 44-45, Gafurov, 1972, 59-60, sonday-aq kiris sózi 7-19 betlerine qarań). Bunnan tısqarı, Margiyana da Ahamoniylerdiń úlkemizge basqınshılıǵına shekem óz patshasına iye edi (Prashek, 1906-1910, 51-54). Mısalı, Gekatey Mileckiy (biziń eramızǵa shekemgi 500 jıllar átirapında jasaǵan) ayırım xorezmlilerdiń Parfiyanıń shıǵısındaǵı qalalarda jasaǵanıń atap ótedi. B.e.shekemgi VI ásirdiń ortalarında «Úlken Xorezm» awqamı ıdıradi, onıń burınǵi iyelikleriniń bir bólegi áyyemgi Baktriya mámleketine ótti. Tap usı waqıtta Iranda húkimet basına Ahamoniyler násili keldi. Bul násildiń tiykarın salıwshı persiyanlar qáwimleriniń patshası boldi. Basqa wálayatlar menen bir qatarda Xorezm ahamoniyler mámleketi quramındaǵi ayırım bir satraplıq boldı. Biraq Xorezmdi jawlap alıw, Aral átirapi sahralarindaǵı hám shólistanlıqlardaǵı kóshpelılerge qarsı basıp alıwshılıq urislar ahamoniylerge qarsı háreketlerdi keltirip shıǵaradi. Jergilikli xalıqtiń basqınshılarǵa qarsı azatlıq ushın gúresleri háwij alıp ketti. Ahamoniylerdiń Orta Aziyaǵa bolǵan atlanısları haqqında sol dáwirdiń tariyxshilari hár qiyli maǵlıwmatlar jazıp qaldırǵan. Iranda Dara I patshalıq (b.e.sh. 522-486 jj) ótken dáwirde Orta Aziya xalıqlari báribir parsılarǵa boysındırıldı. Orta Aziya wálayatlari Margiana, Parfiya, Baktriya, Sogd, Xorezm hám Aral boyı sakları boysındırılǵan. Nátiyjede Xorezm mámleketi hám saklardin áskeriy awqamınan quralǵan mámleket tarqaladi. B.e.sh. VI ásirdiń ortasında qubla Aral boyı xalıqları Axamoniyler basqarǵan mamleket quramına kiredi. Baǵındırǵan wálayatlardı óz quramına qostı hám olardı nayıp-satraplar basqardı. Xorezmniń Ahamoniyler mámleketi quramına kiriwi oǵan aldıńǵı shıǵıstıń áyyemgi civilizaciyasınıń tásir etiwine alıp keldi. Qaraqalpaqstan aymaǵında jasaǵan xalıqlar Iran mádeniyatınıń rawajlanıwı astına túsedi hám sol dáwirde klasslıq jámiyetlik dúzimde jasaydı. Aldińǵı Shıǵıstıń tásiri astında Xorezmde zat almasıwdıń, sawdanıń hám ónermentshiliktiń keń rawajlanıwı kózge tústi. Dáslepki kishigirim qalalar túrindegi oraylar payda boldı. Keń suwǵarıw sistemalari qurıldı. Bekkem qorǵanıw bekinisleri boy tikledi. Bul eń áyyemgi Xorezmniń alǵashqı klasslıq jámiyetten klasslıq qul iyelewshilik jámiyetke ótkenliginiń belgisi edi. Onı áyyemgi Xorezm dáwirinen qalǵan hám elege shekem saqlanǵan materiallıq mádeniyat estelikleriniń qaldıqlari tastıyıqlaydı.
