Llandyfaelog Show
Superb venue for “champions” show
by Meyrick Brown
After many years of annually having to find a new site for their popular summer show the bold decision of the Llandyfaelog and district Society to move a few years ago to the weather security of the Ffos Las racecourse at Trimsaran continues to pay off.
Despite heavy rain during the previous twenty four hours this years show again went ahead virtually as planned with everyone enjoying a superbly sunny day.
A significant feature of this end-of-season attraction for many years has been the dairy cattle “champion of champions” challenge with qualifiers from all the earlier South Wales shows, including the Royal Welsh, allowed to come forward.
Holsteins dominated the main section with the award for the best cow going to the June calved second calver, Feithy Dark Lilac, bred by Eifion, Mary and Wyn Jones.
The heifer prize went to Hefin Wilson’s January calved Woodmarsh Doorman Zandra 3.
Heading the non black and white section was Ioan Harries with the in calf Jersey heifer, Aimless Lady 29.
Supreme from the horse and pony entries was the six year old bay Shire mare, Cefn Machen Andy Bach, owned by Tony Szopa ahead of Bert Lavis’s five year old chestnut Show Hunter Pony, Blue Rock Amethyst, proudly ridden by Seren James.
Keeley Doodes led the Welsh breeds with his Section D Cob stallion, Glanseli Red Flyer, and the best of the part breds went to Valmai Thomas with her yearling filly, Mount Pleasant China Doll.
Chloe Grimshaw won both Sections A and B with the grey, Isfryn Tartan, and the chestnut, Cadlan Valley Sirocco, respectively and the top Palomino was the two year old filly, Fairywood Gwenllian, bred by Debbie Jones.
The horse jumping was cancelled due to ground and safety conditions.
Scoring remarkable success amongst the sheep classes was Iestyn Richards with a yearling Speckled faced ewe securing three major wins including supreme.
