Classifications and Structures of Phraseological Units

By the classification of Academician V. Vinogradov phraseological units are divided into three groups:
phraseological fusions
whose meaning cannot be deduced from the meanings of their component parts
red tape (бюрократизм, волокита)
phraseological unities
expressions the meaning of which can be deduced from the meanings of their components
to show one’s teeth (to be unfriendly),
phraseological combinations
not only motivated but contain one component used in its direct meaning, while the other is used metaphorically
to meet requirement, to attain success

2.1.Etymological analysis of phraseological units with “milk” component.
An important distinctive feature which is not most discussed so far is that of origin. We can subdivide word-stocks into two main set elements of which one native and borrowed words.
As we speak about the etymology of phraseological units it is difficult to divide etymology of phraseological units themselves into any sets. But you can study any word (according to two main sets) which acts as the center of a numerous word- family: watch-dog, watcher, watchword, and watch out. And sometimes we can come across some of the set expressions containing this root: milk and water, a land of milk and honey [16:500]. The word "milk" belonging to the subsets of the native word stock are for the most part characterized by a wide range of lexical and grammatical valency and developed polysemy: they enter a number of set expressions as we mentioned above.

This expression was invented by Shakespeare in Macbeth [44:25], where Lady Macbeth complains that her husband “is too full of the milk of human kindness” to kill his rivals.
