Sir Charles S pencer ‘‘C harlie” C haplin (April 16, 1889 - D ecem ber 2 5 ^
1977) was a fam ous English actor, com edian, movie maker, screenw riter, 
an editor, a m usician, and an author. He was very fam ous in silent 
movies (where there was no talking).
Charlie Chaplin was a perform er for alm ost 70 years. He started 
working when he was 5, and w orked until he w as 80. The character that 
Charlie Chaplin played m ost was called “ the Little Tram p". The “ T ram p” 
was a man of good manners, w ho wore a coat, a pair of big trousers, 
shoes, and a black hat.
In 1900, his brother Sydney helped him get the role of a com ic cat in 
the pantom im e 
Cinderella
In 1903, he was in a play. The next year, he 
became a clown in a com edy company.
Chaplin won tw o special Oscars. Chaplin was chosen fo r both “ Best 
A ctor” and "Best Com edy D irecting” C haplin’s second special award 
came 44 years later, in 1972 When he got this award, people w ere 
standing up and clapping for a long time. In 1976, he was given his last 
and most im portant award. Chaplin becam e the first actor w ho appeared 
on the cover of Time magazine in 1925. The film
City Lights
(1931) is one
