Most managers would agree that disciplining employees is the least favorite part of their job. 
Establishing clear standards and applying them fairly is the key to handling this responsibility 
effectively. 
Goals of Discipline

To correct and improve performance (not to punish)

To connect each issue to its impact on the department or organization
What to Discipline

Performance problems
o
Sub-standard performance. That’s why clear and unambiguous 
standards are so important.

Misconduct or unacceptable behaviors
o
Violations of company policy or procedures
o
Other inappropriate or unacceptable behaviors

What NOT to Discipline

Attitude or intention: Discipline must be based on behaviors and performance. If you have a 
personality clash with an employee, but you can’t tie it to a performance issue, it’s not 
something for which you can discipline the employee.

Personal problems: These often contribute to performance problems. 
It’s important to focus on the performance part. Be compassionate. 
Be willing to listen and refer employees to any employee assistance 
program available. Perhaps you will accommodate for a short time, 
but at some point, the employee must meet performance standards 
again.
