Early Morning House Fire Leaves Two Residents Displaced
MARCH 29, 2008 – An early morning house fire has left two west Laurel residents homeless.
The Laurel Volunteer Fire Department, assisted by firefighters from Prince George’s, Montgomery, Anne Arundel and Howard counties, were summoned to the house, located in the 7800 block of Brooklyn Bridge Road in West Laurel, at 3:55 on the morning of March 29, 2008.
The first arriving unit, Deputy Chief Brad Lovell of the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department, encountered a man on the front porch, who was motioning franticly to DC Lovell to assist in removing his mother, who is wheelchair bound. Both residents were safely removed, and required no medical treatment.
Twenty seven firefighters from the area fought the fire for almost two hours, before bringing it under control. Crews were hampered by a large amount of materials in the home. Due to the conditions in the home, as well as the conditions of the fire, a defensive attack was initiated.
The fire caused $200,000 worth of damage to the structure, and $100,000 to the contents of the house. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
The residents were assisted by the Prince George’s County Office of Emergency Management’s Citizen Services Unit.
