The term ‘speech, language and communication needs’ (SLCN) encompasses a wide range of difficulties related to aspects of communication inchildren and young people. These can include difficulties with fluency, forming sounds and words, formulating sentences, understanding what others say, or using language socially. The following skills are also important to the development of speech, language and communication:
Attention and listening skills – this refers to the ability to pay attention and listen carefully to what is being said. This skill is required in order to have, and to follow, a conversation, as well as retaining information.
