Development of efficient HMI interface system at plants 

and  workshops  is  a  very  important  part  of  automatization  and 

good  plant  performance.  Each  HMI    system  is  individual  for 

location  and  purposes  of  the  production.  It  is  productive 

collaboration  of  all  engineering  disciplines,  especially 

Instrument,  Electrical,  IT,  Process  and  Process  Safety, 

Software.    HMI  helps  to  eliminate  errors  and  reduce  the 

hazardous  moments  by  controlling  alarms  and  trips  during 

design  case  operation  and  undesirable  scenarios.  HMI  shall 

provide  a  common  “look  and  feel”  for  operation  monitoring, 

control and diagnostics of all systems integrated into the ICSS.  

Human  machine  interface  (HMI)  of  process  plant 

automation  systems  is  an  essential  component  in  the 

management  of  process  safety.  HMI  supports  a  wide  range  of 

tasks and activities, including enabling effective response from 

CRT under abnormal situations. A properly designed HMI can 

provide several operational benefits, namely: 

Reduce CRT Loading; 

Improve Situational Awareness; 

Enable Accurate Response; and 

Prompt Operator action 

Expand Layers of Protection for Safety 

Managing Process safety system (PSS) 

Emergency support system (ESS) 

Errors can cost not only damage to reputation and money 

loss,  but  human  life  and  environmental  catastrophes.  HMI

development goals, design process functional requirements for 

all modes of operation that need HMI support as well as design 

practices should be  aligned with  ISA  (International  Society  of 

Automation) standards and guidelines.
