SOME ASPECTS OF SAND CONTROL

Sand control is the representation of all the  installations, 

technology  and  procedures  to  deal  with  the  possible  sand 

production  from  the  formation.  The  aim  of  the  sand  control 

completion is to 

1) Maximize productivity 

2) Minimize impairment of the reservoir 

3) Minimize load-bearing sand and fines 

migration/massive sand intrusion 

There  are  two  major  sand  control  divisions:  Passive  and 

active sand control methods.  

Passive  sand  control  includes  production  rate  limitation 

below  the  critical  sand  production  rate,  which  implies 

operating  rate  limit  wells  and  are  those  methods  that  mitigate 

against sand migration and production.

Three methods are covering the active sand control. They 

are sand-face downhole control, remedial sand control, surface 

sand control with solids control facilities. 

Sand  face  sand  control  methods  generally  consist  of  a 

downhole  filter  medium  that  filters  the  formation  sand  grains. 

Surface  sand  control  methods  consist  of  the  surface  filters 

equipped  at  the  wellhead  or  as  part  of  the  topside  central 

process  facilities  to  remove  produced  solids.  These  include 

strainer  units,  desanders,  and  membranes  systems.  Remedial 

sand  control  represents  all  methods/techniques  required  to 

repair/  workover  failed  downhole  sand  face  sand  control 

completions. 

Active sand control methods are classified  as ‘downhole 

screens’, ‘gravel pack’, and the screenless completions. 

There are more than nine different downhole screen types 

on  the  market  right  now.  They  are  Wire-wrapped  screens 

(WWS), the all-welded or con-slot screens, Pre-packed screens, 

Porous  Sintered  Metal  Screens  (Sinterpak),  Porous  Metal 

Membrane Screens (Stratapac and Stratacoil), expandable sand 

screen (ESS) and etc. These all screen systems have their own 

characteristics,  such  as  advantages  and  disadvantages.  Totally 

downhole  screens  exhibit  best  results  in  horizontal  wells  and 

the installation of them is cheap and simple.  

The gravelpacks  are placed in  the zone opposite the pay 

section  to  do  effective  well  bore  cleanup  process.  The 

gravelpack can be used either in open hole or perforated casing. 

That’s  why  gravelpacks  include  internal  and  external 

gravelpack.

 

Chemical  consolidation  is  a  process  of  injection  of  a 

cementing  agent  into  the  formation  to  enable  a  connection 

between sand grains after curing. There are two principal types 

of treatment:  

1.  Epoxy resin 

2.  Furan, phenolic resins, and alkoxysilane

The  main  advantage  of  sand  consolidation  is  the 

simplification  of  multiple  completions  and  reduction  in 

workover costs.
