SOME INFORMATION ABOUT ENGLISH CUISINE

Some people criticize English food. They say it’s unimaginable, boring, tasteless, it’s chip with everything and totally overcooked vegetables. The basic ingredients, when fresh, are so full of flavor that British haven’t had to invent sauces to disguise their natural taste. What can compare with fresh peas or new potatoes just boiled and served with butter? Why drown spring lamb in wine or cream in spices, when with just one or two herbs it is absolutely delicious? If you ask foreigners to name some typically English dishes, they will probably say “Fish and chips” then stop. It is disappointing, but true that, there is no tradition in England of eating in restaurants, because the food doesn’t lend itself to such preparation. English cooking is found at home. So it is difficult to find a good English restaurant with reasonable prices. In most cities in Britain you will find Indian, Chinese, French and Italian restaurants. In London you will also find Indonesian, Mexican Greek ... Cynics will say that this is because English have no “cuisine” themselves, but this is not quite the true. British cuisine has traditionally been limited in its international recognition to the full breakfast, fish and chips, and the Christmas dinner. Other famous British dishes include the Sunday roast, steak and kidney pie, shepherd's pie, and bangers and mash. British cuisine has many regional varieties within the broader categories of English, Scottish and Welsh cuisine. Each has developed their own regional or local dishes, many of which are geographically indicated foods such as Cornish pasties, the Yorkshire pudding, Cumberland Sausage and Welsh cakes. Sunday roast consisting of roast beef, roast potatoes, vegetables and Yorkshire pudding Fish and chips, a popular take-away food of the United Kingdom. The custom of afternoon tea and scones has its origins in Imperial Britain. British cuisine is the specific set of cooking traditions and practices associated with the United Kingdom. UNWRITTEN RULES nIdN GREAT BRITAIN

Good and bad manners make up the social rules of a country. They are not always easy to learn because they are often not written down in books. For example, British women didn’t go into pubs at the beginning of this century because it was not considered respectable behavior for a woman. Now both women and men drink freely in pubs and women are fully integrated into public life. Visitors to Britain are often surprised by the strange behavior of the inhabitants. One of the worst mistakes is to get on a bus without waiting your turn in the queue. The other people in the queue will probably complain loudly! Queuing is a national habit and it is considered polite or good manners to wait for your turn.
In some countries it is considered bad manner to eat in the street, whereas in Britain it is common to see people having a snack whilst walking down the road, especially at lunch time. Britons may be surprised to see young children in restaurants in the evening because children are not usually taken out to restaurants late at night. And if they make a noise in public or in a restaurant it is considered very rude. In recent years children are playing a more active role and they are now accepted in many pubs and restaurants.
Nowadays smoking has received a lot of bad publicity, and fewer British people now smoke. Many companies have banned smoking in their offices and canteens. Smoking is now banned on the London Underground, in cinemas and theatres and most buses. It is becoming less and less acceptable to smoke in a public place. It is considered rude or bad manners to smoke in someone’s house without permission.
Good and bad manners make up the social rules of a country, which are not very easy to learn at times. British people are famous of their politeness, self-discipline and sense of humour. As any other nation, they have their own national customs. The British place considerable value on punctuality. People make great effort to arrive on time. It is often considered impolite to arrive even a few minutes late.
It is better to arrive a few minutes early for public meetings, concerts, movies, church services and weddings. If you want to visit someone at home, it is a good manner to telephone in advance. If you receive a written invitation to an event, you should respond and tell whether or not you plan to attend. It is considered polite to give a gift to your host, especially if you have been invited for a meal. It will be nice of you to send a thank-you note or to make a telephone call after the visit. As for clothes, one may put on an everyday dress for most visits to people’s homes. However, dress more formally when attending a holiday dinner or cultural event, such as a concert or theatre performance. Regarding greetings it should be said that it is proper to shake hands with everyone to whom you are introduced, both men and women.
Social rules are an important part of our culture as they passed down through history. The British have an expression for following these “unwritten rules”: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do”.
SUPERSTITIONS IN GREAT BRITAIN

There are many superstitions in Britain, but one of the most widely- held is that it is unlucky to open an umbrella in the house. It will either bring misfortune to the person that opened it or to the household. The person who opened an umbrella in fine weather is very unpopular. It’s very unlucky to walk under a ladder. If you most pass under a ladder you can avoid bad luck by crossing your finger and keeping them crossed until you’ve seen a dog.
The number 13 is said to be unlucky for some. And when the 13th day of the month falls on a Friday, most of the people prefer to stay at home.
The worst misfortune that can be fall you is breaking a mirror. That will bring you seven years of bad luck. This superstition is supposed to have originated in ancient times. Because mirrors were considered to be tools of the gods, and at last there is a superstition of touching wood for luck. This measure is most often taken if you have said or done something wrong or stupid. Be careful when you’re handling a mirror in the UK - superstition suggests you'll get seven years of bad luck if you break one! Mirrors were once believed to be windows into other worlds - often worlds where things were the wrong way around. People may also have been frightened that a person’s reflection shatters when a mirror is broken. One theory is that they thought breaking a mirror was like breaking your soul. Some people also believe that mirrors should be covered up during births and funerals, for fear the person’s soul might escape through them to another realm.
Sneezing. You probably know it’s polite to say ‘bless you’ when someone sneezes in the UK, but did you know the custom might have originated in the sixth century? The theory is that sneezing was seen as the first symptom of the plague, so people would say a blessing to ward off the disease. Another theory is that people thought sneezing stopped your heart, just for a moment, and saying ‘bless you’ would make sure your heart keeps beating.
Black cats. Confusingly, black cats can be both lucky and unlucky in the UK, depending on who you ask. Some people say it’s a sign that good things are to come if a black cat crosses your path... while for others, it’s a terrible warning. Maybe it’s just a question of how much you like cats?
Keep your shoes off the furniture. And not just because they’re dirty! According to one UK superstition, putting shoes on the table (especially brand new shoes) is bad luck. Some people even avoid putting shoes on chairs or footstools. One explanation is that in coal mining communities, particularly in north England in the19th century, a miner’s shoes would be placed on the table if he was killed in an accident. The gesture then became a symbol of death.
“TO BE OR NOT TO BE.”

Hamlet: “To be, or not to be: that is the question: Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep; No more; and by a sleep to say we end The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep...”
It is the monologue, which as to me seems, knows each of us; a monologue of the Scene of the I play "Hamlet" of William Shakespeare (written approximately in 1600). But my report won't concern the play of Shakespeare, and will affect only expression from Hamlet's monologue “to be or not to be”. This expression is accented by interpretation on "life - death" or "action - inaction". We will investigate interpretation life death. People speak about life much. Because it is our essence - our life. Immemorial questions of life will always remain actual in our world still lively mankind. But for some reason avoid thus a death subject. Death - a subject frightening and at the same time mysterious. Not many people undertake to speak about it. We are afraid of death. It frightens us by the secret, not knowledge of that happens to us after death. Having learnt all this me one fact, namely the existence fact on our earth of acts of suicide surprised. Why some people intuitively being afraid of death all the same go to it? Why they lose life? What is the reason of their suicide? On these questions I tried to find the answer in the work. In translation from language of science "suicide" means voluntary death. According to open statistics, in the majority of the countries of the world the curve of suicides creeps up today that testifies to globality of this problem. There is a point of view according to which suicides (but not drugs, AIDS or road incidents) become more and more common cause of death in peace conditions (though hardly to reason it due to the lack of reliable statistical data). It is inevitable payment for the benefits of technical progress in all its manifestations: industrialization, urbanization, acceleration of rate of life, complication of human relationship and of course in spirituality.
Groups of risk there is a direct dependence between the suicide and loss of the social status having own naming in sociology - "a complex of the king Lear". So, the high level of suicides among the demobilized officers, young soldiers, people detained. The highest rate of suicides in the following groups: - mentally patients (level of suicides at citizens makes 95,2 persons on 100 thousand of the population),- chronic alcoholics (91 persons on 100 thousand of the population),- addicts (178 people on 100 thousand of the population),- disabled people (110 people on 100 thousand of the population).
