Wilbur Hotel Sayre Bradford Co Pa Oct 4, 1923 4:14 PM office floor writing desk.

I just got in ten minutes ago on the Lehigh Valley RR from New York City where I left at 8:10 PM last night having arrived at 7:10 Pm from Accord NY, got my teeth, my laundry & my supper.

I recall that on Tuesday evening driving from Port Jervis to Middletown with Blaine E. Coleman, the Shewango Mountain Ridge was on the right & our route passed along the Delaware & Hudson Canal & after passing the village of Huguenot NY, there was a large plain between the road & the mountain & Blaine said there was a seventeen mile level there between locks in the old days of the lock. We crossed Neversink River on the way. Nearing Middletown, we passed a big State Institution where Mrs Wood's daughter is confined. She hurt her spine & then went in bathing when her monthly courses were on, with the result that she lost her mind & went crazy.

Yesterday going to Accord NY, I passed at Napanoch & Wawarsing a big state institution for Criminal Mental defectives.

I also passed Kerponkson Sta & P.O. NY which is no doubt the place referred to on page 373 as the place her husband Solomon B. Markle came from but it is not in Greene Co. I think the tombstone of Daniel H. Markle at Accord NY see later is that of his father.
V10 Page 379
Residence of Miss Mary Elvena Mowris Accord NY Oct 3, 1923 9:22 AM

Miss Mowris has a nice home, frame building near the RR sta & adjoining the P.O. & lives very comfortably on the second floor renting the first. She is a tall well built woman with big eyes & was very kind & gave most valuable information on my return later.

She said her grandfather was Henry Markle, called the Yankee from New England but who came originally from Penna she thought. He died when her mother was 20 & his wife died when her (Miss M's) mother was 18. She said she had a list of her mother's brothers & sisters with dates of their birth, but she thinks she packed it & sent it, with other papers to her brother Rev John Russell Mowris, Pastor of the Copley Meth Ch at Copley Ohio near Akron O where she expects to go the last of this month & if she does & finds the record will send it to me. She says she knew Fred Markle well & that he had a brother or two & she thought a sister who married a Decker & says he was a first cousin of her mother Hilah Markle see page 214. She says there is an Elias J. Markle who had a brother Abraham who were sons of Jacob Markle & said Elias J. was living a mile or two from here but she didn't think they were related although they claimed they were.
V10 Page 380
Elias J. had a brother James whose sons Myron & Leonard live in Kingston NY but she said Elias J. Markle living 1 1/2 miles below here on State Roads to Kingston NY aged over 80 could tell of his family. He is living with his nephew Charley Markle, son of Richard.

Leaving now at 9:50 AM to go see Mrs Silkworth & return.

I returned at 11:20 AM & Miss Mowris had written off the record of her father & mother with names & dates of birth of their children which I am embodying in table on page 376.

Miss Mowris during my absence had refreshed her recollections by a talk with an elderly neighbor & said her grandfather, Henry Markle had brothers Jacob, Reuben & Cornelius & she guessed that Cornelius's wife was Betsy or Mary Connor. See page 214 & 215.

Her mother's Uncle "Jake" had two boys Joseph & Lucas who lived around here "Luke: moved away & she thinks was married, but Joseph wasn't.

They had one sister Jemima who married Jacob Davis & they lived half a mile fr here. She was his 2d wife. His first wife was a Schoonmaker by whom he had two children. He had three children by Jemima viz:

1. Jerome Davis, who is dead. Had two girls one of whom is dead.

2. Mary Davis, married Lewis Flenckiger & live at Kerhonkson, NY.

V10 Page 381
3. Mead Davis, he is a school teacher at Connelly across the River from South Roudout near Kingston, NY

Reuben Markle, Uncle of Miss Mowris' mother lived out in Seneca Co NY in the town of Waterloo, NY. He married a Van Wagenen & had a family. He &

his wife are both dead. Don't know whether there are some children there yet or not. Miss Mowris visited him there when she was abt 20 yrs old, say in 1876. Has never seen any of them since.

Reuben, Jacob, Cornelius & Henry had a sister who married Asa Miller & she thinks her name was Lydia as she had an only child. She thinks whose name was Lydia & who she thinks was named for her mother. She gave me the record of her Aunts, Martha & Helena's descendants & of her mother's which I have entered in the table pages 376. She said her mother was 94 when she died. I expected to get dates of her parents & grandparents death at the cem, but in the few minutes I had before the train left, I got but part of what I went for & should go back.

I bade my very helpful & considerate informant goodbye & left at 11:55 AM

I went then to L.M. Decker's store on the other side of the P.O. & he called a young man who came in abt 15 minutes & drove me out two miles to Elias J. Markle's, an old

V10 Page 382
stone house on a slight elevation to the right of the Kingston Road, where the woman told me he was in his 91st yr & had walked down the road half a mile to Edgar Krom's so my auto having gone, I walked back & was:
At residence of Edgar Krom, Rochester Tp Ulster Co NY Accord P.O. Oct 3, 1923 1 PM

This is a fine old residence to the left of the road coming back a thousand feet or more & Mr Krom, with gray whiskers said his ancestors settled there abt 1720 or 1701. He said Elias J. Markle, who was his Uncle by marriage, he having married a sister of his father, had not been there today, but our auto having returned, he got in with me & we went up to the garage on the road, where we found Mr Markle & took him back to the house. He said his full name was:

Elias Jacob Markle Born Feby 14, 1833 in this Tp in or near Accord, son of Jacob A. Markle who was born in the same Tp & neighborhood in 1801 & who died in 1883 aged 82 yrs. He died in the fall. His house got fire & he being feeble was not able to get out & was suffocated from the smoke. His old Dutch Bible with the record was burned in that fire. Jacob A's father was Abraham Markle, as Elias J. says his father often told him, that his Elias J's brother Abraham was named for his grand
V10 Page 383
father. He says his grandfather came from Holland so his father told him. He cant recall whether he ever saw him or not, but he does recall that he, Abraham, his grandfather had the following children:

Jacob A, his father

Elias, for whom he was named

Johanns

Mollie, who was married twice

Elizabeth, who married an Osterhoudt

Nancy, who was married.

His Uncle Elias Markle had sons Jacob & James whose descendants scattered off & one was a miller below Hawley.

His Uncle Johannns [sic] had children:

1. Jacob A. Markle who married Dinah Osterhoudt & had 8 boys & 2 girls

2. Abraham

3. Thomas

4. Helena

He said old "Hancum" as he called him ie Henry Markle, the grandfather of Miss Mowris, was some kind of a cousin of his father, so his father had told him.

He says his grandfather Abraham didn't come over alone, thinks a brother came with him. Says he is sure his grandfather came over from Holland & landed about Newton. My time being limited, Mr Krom proposed getting further records & sending to me, so I gave him my address. Mr Markle is a slender, tall well preserved man with moustache & sparse whiskers under his chin.

At residence of Daniel Markle, No 203 Harrison St, Sayre Bradford Co Pa Oct 4, 1923 9 AM

Mr Markle is a remarkably well preserved man for his years with a full smooth unwrinkled face & talks with a very noticeable Dutch accent. He does not know the name of his grandfather, but says his father Jonas Markle always told him that he, Jonas was born in Berks Co Pa. He thinks his grandfather died in Berks Co Pa but is not sure but says his widow died at the home of her son Jonas Markle in the Quakake Valley when Daniel, my informant, was a small boy abt 6 yrs old & is buried in the Quakake Cem Packer Tp, Carbon Co Pa as is her sons Jonas, Abraham, & Reuben, but he says there are no markers to any of them. He says his Uncle Gideon moved to the State of Indiana but he don't know the town or county. He does not remember ever seeing him. Only knew Abraham & Reuben & the Aunt that lived in Scranton Pa. There were three other sisters, one in Ohio, one in Reading & one here, but he never saw them. He thinks his brother Joel, 3 yrs older than him would have his father's bible. He, Joel Markle, lives in Rush Tp, Schuylkill Co Pa, an old bachelor living by himself. Go to McAdoo Pa & Mr Miller who has a knitting mill can tell you how to find him as he passes his place every day in his auto. Mrs Markle has brought out their
V10 Page 387
own big bible printed by C.F. Vent, NY & Cincinnati 1872 from which & their information I am making up a genealogical table with names & dates of birth of their children as given in the bible.

Mrs Markle says she had a lot of church cfts giving births & christening of her husband's brothers & sisters, but she gave them to his brother Joel. Mr Markle says that of his children, Laura & Charles were born in Packer Tp, Carbon Co Pa & all the others were born in Rush Tp, Schuylkill Co Pa. He kind of half believes on thinking it over that his grandfather's name was Abraham Markle but isn't sure. Says his Uncle Abe had a son Abe & his Uncle Rube had a son Abe. Mr Markle has a short iron gray mustache & his hair is iron grey. His wife is a small active lithe woman. Their youngest daughter, Lilly (Mrs Kleckner) came over & has given me her record on Page 389 & helped me to complete her brother William's on Page 388 by calling Amy who is at a neighbor's on the phone.

Mrs Markle's hair is still black.

I will now transcribe what I penciled down after leaving Mr Daniel Markle at Sayre Pa yesterday afternoon in addition to what I wrote down today in Milton Pa at the three residences visited Pages 390 to 396, the greater part of my conference with Georgia Roat being penciled down & she being a veritable find & delightful charming cousin fully sensed & full of the traditions of the family. When I got to the Wilbur Hotel & asked for the street car for Elmira yesterday, the 12:30 PM car had just left two minutes before, but I took the 12:50 car to Waverly NY & while waiting there for the 2 o'c car, got shaved. reached Elmire NY at 3 PM & found train for Milton Pa wd not leave until 3:55 PM, so that did not give me time to go out 4 miles in the country to see: Mrs Geo Gasper Pine City NY RD1 who is Sudie, one of the daughters of Elizabeth Markle (dau of Abraham) (See Page 258 bottom) who mar Henry Henninger whose address Mrs Daniel Markle gave me.

She is over 50, was married before, write her now & get her own & her mother's record. I then got my dinner & went over the directories while waiting for my train.

Daniel Markle has the typical Markle build, a little under average height & stockily & solidly built with the distinctive Markle type of face. His wife is a small homely woman, but was very kind.

Leaving 10:55 AM

I then walked down Turbot St to Centre & turning to the right, went one block to Stanton Ave & turning to the left, found Mrs Smith at the first house on the right hand side with her younger daughter Ruth & on Pages 393 & 394 is the record she gave me partly from their records & from her & Ruth's memory. The Kohlers had been there Sunday & told them of my coming. I then walked back Turbot St past the cemetery to Mahoning St to Georgia Roat's, see pages 394 to 396 et al & what follows:

V10 Page 404
At Georgia Roat's 376 E. Mahoning St 1 PM (see page 394 et seq) Milton Pa Oct 5, 1923.

Mrs Roat with the proverbial Markle hospitality, insisted on my having lunch with them, so before I had quite finished copying the translation from her great grandfather's wonderful bible with the fine firm clasps, which it took us both to hook, by my pressing down, I went & sat down with her & her husband & her fine nephew, Geo H. Ettla. Mr Roat asked me to say the blessing & we had a fine lunch, everything being good & tasty. Mr Roat is a smooth faced handsome man, the picture of health & Mr Ettla is 6 ft with a Roman nose & looks much like Jim Scholl. We talked for 3 hours & I noted down part of what Georgia told. She said she was delicate as a girl & consequently did not marry until too late to have children, which she said was a mistake & she regretted. She is about the size of Mrs Pallini & while not a handsome woman is a wonderfully good woman.

She said when at Reading Pa, some 13 to 15 yrs ago, she met a Mrs Burke (it was Brandt) who was a Lutheran aged up in the 60s, whose husband was then living who was the daughter of Samuel Merkel who about 40 yrs ago was Treasurer
V10 Page 405
of Berks Co & who was an iron man & had furnaces & who owned the old Moselem Springs farm where his ancestors had settled & he was the seventh generation of Markle owners. He left the farm to his son who was a younger brother of Mrs Brandt. He would not farm, but ran on the RR was dueless, with no love of the family traditions & after letting the farm run down, he sold it. He later visited Mr & Mrs Roat here in Milton. She doesn't know whether either or both of them are living but I must go to Reading & see if she is still there. Also look up my 1898 index & see if I got a reference to Samuel Merkle's will. The son was the 8th generation of Markle owners Georgia says Mrs Rhoads (mother of John H.) was a first cousin of Georgia's grandmother Katie Follmer, her mother Esther Bushar being a sister of Christian Markle 1758 1836.

Esther Bushar had a daughter Hettie Bushar who married David Krauser & their grandson, William Krauser is a druggist here owning the Drugstore at No 9 S. Front ST just a few doors from the hotel Milton. Georgia phoned the Drugstore & residence & found that he & his wife were both out & would not return until 6 PM. He is abt 32. Ask him for Grandparents bible. Write him.

V10 Page 406

Hettie Bushar Krauser's children were:

1. Charles Bushar Krauser, oldest. He is dead. He had a son:

1. James, living here on Front St unmarried.

2. Hettie died unmarried aged abt 18

2. Ellis Krauser, died unmarried.

3. Louise Krauser, married Cyrus Brown who had but one child:

1. Esther Brown who married Dr Wm H. Follmer. She is dead, but left one son:

A. Cyrus Brown Follmer, who was overseas in the World War & rendered very distinguished services in the ambulance corps, got several medals of honor & was by reason thereof was made U.S. Asst Consul at Lyons, France. He is unmarried. Write him. His father married again & lives now in Williamsport Pa.

4. Daniel Krauser, married Catharine Heinen. Both dead & it is their son Wm H. who is the druggist here above referred to. I called at the Drug store at 5:30 PM on my way to the train & he had not returned. The clerk gave me a slip: E. Krauser & Bro Druggists No 9 South Front St Milton Pa. I told him I wd write.

5. Emma Krauser, died unmarried.
V10 Page 407
Of Christian Markle's (1758 1836) children, Georgia gave me the following record:

1. Jacob Markle, mar 1. Catharine Hougendoebler & had one son by her viz:

1. Zachariah Markle. He married a woman of lovely character both beautiful & good & he was so wonderfully in love with her that when she died comparatively young, he so revered her memory that he wouldn't think of having anyone take her place. Another mistake as Georgia said. No issue.

[Jacob Markle] mar 2. Harriet Echard who had a queer strain that descended to her children:

2. Elizabeth, died unmarried, born 1828

3. Anne, died unmarried, born 1830.

Mrs Cora Dahlstrom, oldest child of Geo B. Markle Sr was Anne's closest friend & may have gotten her & her father's records. The mother, Harriet would be born about 1797 & died _____. Cora Dahlstrom got her father Geo B. Markle's bible & probably that of Anne's father. As she just died abt 2 wks ago, I think it well to see her husband at Ardmore Pa soon. Anne was born abt 1830 & died I believe abt 1911 as heretofore shown. Elizabeth was 2 yrs older & born say 1828.
2. William Markle, died unmarried when young & is likely buried here but is not sure.
3. John Markle, got his record in part at Hazleton Pa Get bible to complete.
V10 Page 408
4. Elizabeth Markle, married Robert Gray, a Scotchman & lived & died here. Buried in a cemetery here which the city took & Georgia undertook to remove her remains to her lot in Harmony Cem & did do so, but in doing it the stone was broken & carried off & the inscription lost. Thinks she died in 1850 or 1852 & he survived her. A one line printed slip she found in the big bible says he died in 1854 aged 70 yrs. They had 4 children:

1. John Gray, married & had 2 children. He left Milton Pa early before Georgia's time & she don't know what became of them.

2. Jane Gray, married a Johnson & had but one child & it died young & she died at Montoursville Pa

3. Catharine Gray married the same Johnson, who had first married her sister Jane for his 2d wife. No issue.

4. Clarissa Gray, born she says 1809 & died 1889, died unmarried in Milton Pa "was a proud old spinster". Anne Markle had a tombstone put up for her but without dates which they explain by saying it would cost more to have dates cut.
5. Samuel died when a child
6. Gideon Markle married Mary Robins, a proud aristocratic woman of Sunbury Pa. He was killed in a runaway accident caused by an organ grinder playing his organ coming up over a hill &
V10 Page 409
meeting him, scaring his spirited horses, of which he was a great lover. He was not killed outright, but died from the effects of his hurts. Georgia says she was once with her grandmother Katie Follmer when an organ grinder appeared & she made them drive him off, as she never after countenanced them because of having caused the death of her favorite brother. He died early in 1851, see item 35 page 334. His wife survived him a number of years. Had two sons & one daughter.

1. Dr John G. Markle, oldest

2. Christian Markle

3. Mary Georgiana Markle. She mar 1. Horatio Wolverton, She mar 2. Genl Geo B. Cadwallader a distinguished Civil War veteran & a druggist later. Had children:

a. Mary Wolverton, d.y. aged 7 yrs

b. Mary Markle Cadwallader, living at No 22 S 5th ST Across from the five half million dollar Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Stone, corner of 5th & Market in 2d house from corner. She lives by herself, but has a companion living with her.

c. Anna Jones Cadwallader, m.1. Simon P. Wolverton Jr, His father was first cousin of Mary Georgina's first husband. M.2d Wm R. Rohrbach & live at
V10 Page 410
No 1040 Market St, Sunbury Pa. No issue by either husband. Her present husband was a widower with children.
7. Maria (always called Mary) married Jesse Derickson & had a number of children. Two died in infancy. Family record is in the West & Mrs R. will get it for me. Of their children:

1. Samuel Derickson oldest, lived in NY City, a very excellent gentleman & was a close friend of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt & a witness to one of the codicils of his will & was also a close friend of Russell Sage. He died in NY City about 1908 aged abt 89 yrs. He was a real Markle in appearance & Georgia said the contour of his face was strikingly like mine. He had six children, 3 daughters & 2 sons & a baby died young. His record would likely be with his daughter:

a. Sarah Waddell, widow of Robert Waddell. Did live in Washington Square, but moved she thought to suburbs, says can get her address from John Markle, NY. She has three children, a son & two daughters. Her address is No 2 Graham Court at 1945 16th St NY City

b. Mary Derickson mar. Townsend who is dead & she lives at above number or did two yrs ago. No issue.

c. William Wood Derickson Jr, dead.
V10 Page 411
Was married & died in NY. Had 3 children, 2 boys & a girl. The girl is married. Don't know abt the sons. Ask Mrs Waddell.

d. Harriet Derickson died unmarried in NY City

e. Samuel Derickson died a few yrs ago in Connecticut where he was a practicing physician. Married & had one daughter Irene who was unmarried 2 yrs ago.

f. the baby that died young

2. Mary Derickson, next to Samuel died here in 1912 aged 93 yrs a very excellent & wonderful woman. She is buried in the upper cem & would have a marker.

3. Martha Derickson mar Joseph Anten. She died a young woman without issue abt 1849. Buried in upper Cem. He is dead & buried in the west where he went after her death.

4. William Wood Derickson, father of my informant & was the handsomest man in Milton Pa, an excellent man & very popular. He, like his brother Samuel, took after the Markles in looks & disposition. He died of cirrhosis of the liver. He was in business in NY City with this brother Samuel. He married his first cousin Mary Elizabeth Follmer "the best woman that ever lived", daughter of Philip Follmer & his wife Katie Markle Follmer.
V10 Page 412
Philip Follmer was a very handsome man, but from the country of one of the earliest Pioneer families of Northumberland Co Pa. He was a rich farmer living 3/4 mile from town. The Markle girls, Mary & Katie were also very handsome. There was a Union of a couple of churches which both families attended & there the young people met. Jesse Derickson was a cabinet maker & his son Wm W. became adept as a craftsman & made a darling little chair for his best beloved cousin Mary Elizabeth Follmer. He was ten yrs older than her. Her parents never dreamed of anything but a cousinly affection, but when she was 18 & he 28, they plighted their love & when she was 22 he came back from NY & asked her mother for Mary Elizabeth's hand in marriage. She was so utterly surprised & it was so against her religion & principles for cousins to marry that she refused & he went west & came back utterly heart broken & sick unto death & was about dying, but told her mother that if she would let him marry Mary Elizabeth, he would be restored. He was such an excellent man & the relationship being the only objection, Katie Follmer said let's go & eat & be reconciled like David which they did & he & Mary Elizabeth were married & went to NY City to
V10 Page 413
live & later came back to Milton Pa to live by reason of his ill health & liver trouble thereby superinduced & their six children were all born here in Milton.

A. Jesse Derickson died aged 6 yrs

B. Catharine Markle Derickson married Harry David Ettla of Marietta Pa. She died in 1918 & he lives in Williamsport Pa. She had two children:

a. Geo Henry Ettla born June 30, 1888, single. It is he I met who was with us at lunch & I think lives there, a fine man.

b. Myron Derickson Ettla born Apr 7, 1891, also single. Lives in Rock Island Ills.

C. Samuel Derickson, a twin with Philip Henry. He lives in Dorsey Nebraska & has the bible record of his grandparents Jesse & Mary Derickson & like his sister Georgia is a stickler for old family heirlooms. The cradle spoken of later is also with him. He has 8 children. She will get me their record.

D. Philip Henry, twin with Saml, died a babe.

E. Georgia Markle Derickson born Jany 8, 1862, my good gracious & wonderful informant who by her statement that her mother & grandmother told her that Esther Bushar was a sister of her own great grandfather Christian

V10 Page 414
Markle, enables me with the information gotten in Aug 1898 from John H. Rhoads & the records at Reading Pa to locate this Christian as the son of Peter Markle the oldest brother of my great grandfather Casper Markle 1730 1819. She married Apr 25, 1912 at Milton Pa by Rev Dr J.M. Reimensnyder to Clarence Anten Roat who she styles as good a husband as ever was, who was born in Mausdale, Montour Co Pa, near Danville Pa Jany 17, 1869, son of Lewis Roat & his wife Jane Anten (of the distinguished Hunter family) a 2d cousin or 1st cousin once removed of Philip Anten. His business is that of an auditor which he has held with the American Car & Foundry Co for 25 yrs. By reason of delicate health she did not marry earlier. No issue.

F. William Wood Derickson Jr died in 1872 aged 7 yrs

The Shimer Works are known as Milton Mfg Co. They make nuts & bolts.
5. Catharine Derickson, dau of Mary Markle Derickson & sister of Mrs Roat's father mar Geo Deibold of Phila Pa. No issue. Both dead. She too was
V10 Page 415
a beautiful woman, was buried in Milton Pa in upper cem & has a marker. She thinks he is buried in Phila Pa.

6. Samuel? died in infancy.

7. A son died in infancy. Their records wd be with Samuel Derickson of Dorsey Neb who has the Jesse Derickson bible.

8. Sarah Caroline Derickson last child of Jesse & Mary Markle Derickson died aged 83 yrs in 1920 & is buried in the upper Milton cemetery. She was unmarried.

8. Katherine Markle married Philip Follmer of Turbot Tp 3/4 of a mile fr Milton Pa. The Follmers were early pioneer settlers here. The family came to Penna in 1738 from Wurtemburg Germany, coming over on the ship Friendship & first settled in NY & soon removed to Berks Co Pa. See History of Follmer Family 1899 Published & compiles by Chas Carroll Follmer, Grand Rapids Mich & can be had by sending him two dollars. It only gives his branch however. Georgia allowed me to bring with me four type written pages of Derickson & Follmer which I am to have copied & return originals to her with a carbon copy ctd top of next page.

Mr C.F. Markle came in at 6 Am & it is now 7 AM & will have to quit, get bkfst & to to train.

Continued from line 32 preceding page.

Philip & Katy Follmer had four children. They were very religious. Georgia thinks her Uncle's daughter must have gotten the bible of Philip & Katy. Their children:

1. Samuel Follmer married Sarah Summers from Milton Pa & had but one child.

A. Ella, who married Wm Stout & had four children:

a. Sarah Stout married Philip Kohler of New York City. She is dead, he living in NY City. No issue.

b. Maurice, married.

c. Lee, married

d. "Ned" Thinks was not married. Don't know about these boys except that one lives in Phila & one in Chicago.

2. Mary Elizabeth Follmer, married Wm W. Derickson see page 411 et seq where I have part of this.

3. Philip Henry Follmer m.1. Sarah Dresler & had one child:

A. Catharine who married a Mr Noll a Reformed Minister who lived for many years, but recently came fr there to Milton Pa He is dead & she lives here with two daughters, one daughter is married & living in Mass.

(It is now 7:44 Pm & I am sleepy & will go to bed as I didn't go to bed last night at all.)

(It is now 8:40 AM 9th & I will resume. I slept 11 hours last night fr 8:45 PM to 7:45 AM)

Write to her viz: Mrs Catharine Noll RFD Milton Pa for her grandparents bible record & her
V10 Page 417
father's record & her own & her children's.

[Philip Henry Follmer] m.2. Mary Meixsell & by her had two children:

B. Carrie, unmarried lived in Lewisburg Pa

C. Grace, unmarried lived in Lewisburg Pa. Their mother & father both dead. Georgia says they would not have old record but Catharine would.

Referring to the Follmer History adverted to above, she said George Jacob Follmer, who was born in America, moved in 1773 from Bethel Tp Berks Co Pa to Turbot Tp, Northumberland Co Pa. He came with his brother Michael Follmer, who was the father of Henry (see item 5 page 402) the father of Philip who married Katie Markle.

Speaking of her talk with Mrs Burke when in Reading Pa, Georgia said the old Markle homestead after being in the family for 8 generations passed after 1888 following the death of Samuel Merkle into other hands to whom his son sold it. This Samuel was the father of Mrs Brandt.

Leaving 4:11 PM

I noted down after leaving Georgia the following things she told me:

Robert Gray died in 1854 aged 70 yrs. She thinks his wife died 20 yrs before that.

Mrs Roat said that Christian Markle, her great grandfather, moved from Berks Co Pa to Bloomsburg Columbia Co Pa & she thinks her grandmother was born in Columbia Co Pa. Mrs R has looking glass they brought to Bloomsburg Pa with them apparently as good as new 3 ft by 16 inches black walnut frame. She also owns the cradle they brought, but which she loaned to her brother Sam in Nebraska to rock his children in. In moving

V10 Page 418
from Berks Co Pa, they strapped this looking glass & the cradle on the feather beds & thus carried them safely to their new home in the wagon. This was before her grandmother was born. She says the cradle is a plain cherry one & in it her grandmother was rocked & all of her children, grandchildren & some great grandchildren & is still good & strong. Her brother Sam in Nebraska has it now.

The big German bible was given by Christian Markle to Katie his favorite child & she gave it to her daughter Mary Elizabeth who gave it to her daughter Georgia as a wedding gift. She has also a breakfast table which they brought from Berks Co Pa

Mr Roat says he was born Jany 17, 1869 at Mausdale, just this side of Danville Pa in Montour Co Pa.

Georgia says her grandmother Katie Markle went with her husband Philip Follmer into the Reformed Church to which the family has since adhered.

Georgia spoke of an old leather bag that Mrs Brandt told her about which had been in the Markle family for generations & which had in it the old family records & old letters from prominent members of the family & other prominent people & which Mrs Brandt said had been stolen after her father's death. Among the letters in this bag were some from a member of the Markle family who was a sea Capt or at least a seafaring man. This was probably Bernard, a son of Peter, who if I remember right was a seafaring man.

I then got the 4:50 PM P&R RR train for Sunbury Pa, got my dinner there at the Neff & walking out Market St was soon at my cousin's viz:

V10 Page 419
Residence of Miss Mary Markle Cadwallader No 22 S. Fifth St Sunbury Pa Oct 5th, 1923 7:33 Pm

Miss Cadwallader admitted me. She is a short well built woman about the size of Sarah F. Ainsworth & says her father, Genl George B. Cadwallader was born in the country, near Langhorne, Bucks Co Pa, but was brought to Danville Pa when about 2 yrs old & reared by his Uncle Dr Magill a brother of his mother Hannah Magill. His father, Dr Cadwallader was a practicing physician in Bucks Co Pa about Doylestown Pa.

Genl Geo B. Cadwallader died Oct 21, 1914 aged 86 yrs & 1 day born then Oct 20, 1828. He was stricken with pneumonia on his birthday 20th & died next day. Miss C's mother Mary Georgianna died May 9, 1885 aged 45 yrs & a few months. Both are buried at Pomfret Manor Cem here. She thinks she was born in June & was either 44 or 45 yrs & 11 mos old. She was daughter of Gideon Markle see page 409 & mar 1. Horation [sic] Wolverton. Don't think he was related to her sister's husband. They had one daughter:

1. Mary Wolverton, who died young

Mar 2. Genl Geo B. Cadwallader who served 4 yrs in the Civil War. He enlisted first at Shamokin Pa for 3 mos service & then re enlisted & was on the staff of Gen Sherman on his march to the sea & then with Sheridan & was with Meade & at the Battle of Gettysburgh Pa was a Capt a Quarter Master Genl, a Colonel & was brevette Genl. In the loyal legion was known as Col. The fine building on lot adjoining is where Miss C's mother was reared. This old property

has been in the Robins family since they got it from the Penns, & the original title papers were to Zachariah Robins who she thinks was the father of her grandmother Polly Robins who married Gideon Markle. She survived her husband some years, but died before Miss C. was born. They are buried here in the old graveyard called Sunbury Cemetery at Lower end of 4th St.

(It is 11:11 Am & I must go in town). (It is 6:09 PM & I am back & continuing)

Their son, John G. Markle & Mrs Cadwallader were moved from there & buried in the new cemetery established before 1893 (Mother dead 38 yrs was not buried there) She thinks there is a flat stone with inscription. Mrs C. had by her second husband:

3. Mary Markle Cadwallader born Oct 10, 1875 in Sunbury Pa, my informant.

4. Anna Jones Cadwallader born Mch 23, 1879

2. A son born prematurely & died same day oldest by 2nd husband.

4. Anna Jones Cadwallader m.1. Simon P. Wolverton Jr on Oct 10, 1906 at Sunbury Pa, son of Simon P. Wolverton Sr & his wife Elizabeth Hendricks. He was born Oct 21, 18__ & died Nov 10, 1915. No issue. He was State Senator several terms. He is buried in the Wolverton mausoleum in the cemetery which is away out Market St & the Catawissa Road on the outskirts of the town & is called the Pomfret Manor cem. M.2. Aug 29? 1921 in Phila Pa to Wm Rockefeller Rohrbach son of Lloyd T. Rohrbach & his wife Jennie Haas who was born

V10 Page 421
in Sunbury Pa Mch 8? 1876. No issue. He was a widower with children & he is the owner of the Water Co which has the old home adjg Miss C. rented for their office.

Miss M. says her mother had a brother Christian Markle who went off from home when 18 yrs old & they never heard from him after except that her & his brother Dr John Markle (a doctor who never practiced) heard in Phila Pa through someone in one of the lodges that he had died in the west. She says her Uncle John Markle died unmarried when she was about a year old. See item 38 P 335.

Leaving 8:20 PM

Charles Fenton Markel of 1304 Market St came in here at 6 AM as arranged. He was automobiling this summer to Harrisburg Pa & on making a detour between Selinsgrove & Liverpool, he passed through a small village called East Salem, Juniata Co Pa where a Mr Markel, owner of "Markels Variety Store, East Salem Pa was having travelers sign in his book & when he signed his name, he said his name was also Markel & he had been located at East Salem Pa for 35 yrs. Charles F. says his grandfather, was Martin Markle who died rather young, aged he thought 40 or 42. His home was back of Herndon Pa where he was a farmer. His widow, Betsy Markle never remarried & survived him many years & lived to be 84 yrs & some months & died abt 1895, or when C.F. was abt 16 yrs old. She was a grand old lady. Her husband Martin had been a strict disciplinarian. She died on the old homestead that had been her husband's. Her son, John Markel or Merkel (see item 41 page 336) lived there with her & later bought the place. They each kept separate tables until her very last years when she was not able to continue cooking. He never heard of any brothers or sisters of his grandfather. His grandmother's name before marriage was Elizabeth Shadle She had the family bible of her husband & her son John got it & when he died in Jany 1923
