Lesson plan
Topic: Developing student’s communicative competence through short stories (Food)
Level: B2
Time: 80 min
Objectives:

  • To aware the advantages and disadvantages of course books

  • To acknowledge about how course books can be selected

  • To raise students’ awareness of analyzing and evaluating course books

Expected results: As we learned from the research before, one of the most worthwhile and precise ways in developing speaking skills of students is using TBLT methods like communicative practice and learning through the context.
They help not solely for teachers, but also for students in order to boost their vocabulary, lets them think logically, be conscious of using vastly appropriate collations in their interactions and speech, gives inspiration of developing oratory skills for students.
Furthermore, teaching communicative competence of students with the TBLT methods and learning through the context are able to improve student’s receptive and productive skills efficiently as well. One point that should be mentioned as a sample is students were given a chance of recalling all previous learned words and provided various tasks concerning enhancing their communicative competence, especially target words which can be utilized in the topic “Short stories”, were showed a variety of illustrations with the words below as visual aid for participators to describe, clarify their ideas about the jobs by means of questions which submitted in pre-stage of the lesson. With the helping of pictures students were able to comprehend what the objective of each activity and what was information given for.
Materials: Internet sources, handouts, course book samples
Procedure
Lead-in
Teacher gives some questions related to the topic. 10 minutes for explaining the task with PPT.
As well as while working with the text teacher uses technique: Gallery wall, and while working with questions based on the tasks Kahoot! And Flippty tasks are suitable.
Questions may vary:

  • What does Short story mean?

  • Have you ever read short stories?

  • Do you know the best short story writers in English literature?

  • What can you say about the story “The last leaf by O.Henry”?

Activity 2 Students read the text and then they will check their answer [10 min]
