Figure 1.1.1 Internet of Things Alliances and Consortia [1]
The motivation behind the standardization effort is to allow IoT to connect the domain-
specific applications to application-domain-independent services seamlessly. For example, the
applications in domain-specific verticals such as healthcare, transportation, automobiles, smart
home etc. should be equally compatible with domain-independent horizontals such as analytics
and network monitoring [2]. This framework has been depicted in Figure 1.1.2:

Internet of Things: Projected Growth
As has been widely understood, the interconnected devices are expected to continue
their steady growth in number. Ericsson have forecasted that the world will have around 29
billion connected devices by 2022, out of which 18.1 billion will be the IoT devices [3]. The
trend in the growth of IoT devices in number can be observed in Figure 1.2.3:
Figure 1.2.1 Forecasted Growth of Connected Devices in Ericsson Mobility Report [3]

As seen in the table in Figure 1.2.1, the Wide-area IoT
1
and Short-range IoT
2
devices
have the highest compound annual growth rate
3
of 30% and 20% respectively. Which means,
out of all the interconnected devices, IoT devices will be the entities that will drive the growth
of interconnected things (hence IoT in general), in years to come.
1.3

Internet of Things: Device Management
Now let’s start diving into the specificities of the thesis. In a given IoT ecosystem, a
management system must be in place to support enrollment of new devices, authentication and
provisioning of the devices, service deployment on devices, configuration, monitoring and
software upgrade of the devices. These activities constitute the term ‘device management’ in
IoT context. Device management is one of the fundamental aspects of an Internet-of-Things
ecosystem, that enables the management of all devices in the ecosystems as described in the
previous sentences.
Open Mobile Alliance’s Light-weight Machine-to-Machine protocol or OMA LWM2M
is a popular and secure device management protocol designed to provide device management
functionality over wireless sensor networks or cellular networks (e.g. LPWAN technologies
such as NB-IoT). To understand how LWM2M has been pieced together, the detailed protocol
stack has been shown in Figure 1.3.1
