Hence, Wakaama depends on UNIX libraries to implement DTLS and UDP layers. As 
neither Arduino Mega nor SODAQ SARA have Linux kernel support, porting Wakaama to 
these boards requires elimination of UNIX dependencies. Research team at the telecom vendor 
have a partial stack implemented (UDP over NB-IoT) for SODAQ SARA, without DTLS.

For this thesis, I worked to add DTLS support and integrate full LWM2M stack over 
NB-IoT by integrating tinydtls into the partially ported version.

Implementation, Testing and Results 
So far, the chapters cover the ‘study’ part of thesis. That is, we have seen in-depth study 
of OMA LWM2M protocol, study and analysis of IPSO object model, Constrained Application 
Protocol. We have also analysed Narrow-band IoT radio technology.
In this chapter, the ‘implementation’ part of the thesis has been covered. We will begin 
with implementation of NB-IoT based communication.

NB-IoT based Communication 
NB-IoT based communication can be implemented in two ways:
a) On a microcontroller board without on-board NB-IoT modem by interfacing an external 
modem 
b) On a microcontroller board with NB-IoT modem.
For this thesis, I have implemented the NB-IoT based communication in both ways 
described, to evaluate and compare them in order to select the best suited option.
3.1.1
 
NB-IoT implementation without on-board Modem (Arduino Mega + 
BC66) 
I used Arduino Mega 2560 microcontroller board and Quectel NB-IoT BC66 module 
for this implementation. BC66 can be accessed serially via Arduino Mega to initialize and drive 
the NB-IoT Communication by sending AT Commands serially. BC66 is shown in the 
following figure:
