Fire extinguishers should be sited on exit routes, 
preferably near to exit doors or where they are provided 
for specifi c risks, near to the hazards they protect. 
Notices indicating the location of fi re-fi ghting equipment 
should be displayed where the location of the equipment 
is not obvious or in areas of high fi re risk where the notice 
will assist in reducing the risk to people in the workplace.
All Halon fi re extinguishers, other than in defi ned 
critical uses such as aircraft, military vehicles and vessels, 
have been decommissioned as of 31 December 2003 and 
disposed of safely.

Maintenance and testing of 
fi re-fi ghting equipment
It is important that equipment is fi t for its purpose and is 
properly maintained and tested. One way in which this 
can be achieved, is through companies that specialize in 
the test and maintenance of fi re-fi ghting equipment.
All equipment provided to assist escape from the 
premises, such as fi re detection and warning systems 
and emergency lighting, and all equipment provided to 
assist with fi ghting fi re, should be regularly checked and 
maintained by a suitably competent person in accord-
ance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Table 
13.2 gives guidance on the frequency of test and mainte-
nance and provides a simple guide to good practice.
