turn-taking:
Conventions that allow for one speaker to give up the floor and for another
speaker to begin speaking. For instance, the current speaker could ask
another speaker a question, requiring the other speaker to take the floor.
Or a speaker not speaking could overlap his or her speech with the cur-
rent speaker and make an attempt to take the floor.
typological system
A system of classification of languages according to linguistic features 
of classification
: that they have in common. In terms of word order, English and Spanish
are typologically similar because both languages have SVO as the most
common word order.
unity of structure:
The hierarchical structure of a text: its beginning, middle, and end. For
instance, a conversation can optionally begin with a greeting, followed by
a series of speaker turns allowing speakers to talk about various topics,
and then end with some kind of salutation. Other texts (e.g. an academic
paper) will have a more clearly defined hierarchical structure.
unity of texture:
The various devices within a text (e.g. markers of cohesion, the place-
ment of new information at the beginning of a clause and old informa-
