rise of architecture, monumental sculpture and painting, coroplasty and the 
art of gliptics. Buddhist temples and stupas found in Ayritom, Dalvarzintepa, 
and Old Termez, the Bactrian-Tokharistan culture is shaped in a way that is 
typical of local Bactria under the strong influence of Hellenistic and Indian 
Buddhist culture.
In 1220, Termez was conquered by the Mongol army led by Genghis 
Khan. The rebuilding of the ruined city of Termez dates back to the early 
14th century, in the lower reaches of the Surkhandarya, north of present-day 
Termez. In the late fifties of the fourteenth century, when the Chigatay 
nation of the Mongol state was in crisis, power in Termez passed into the 
hands of local clerical feudal lords-sayyids. Later, the lands of southern 
Uzbekistan became part of the state of Amir Temur. After his death, Termez 
was ruled by Amir Temur's grandson Khalil Sultan, and in 1409 by his son 
Shahrukh. By the second half of the 15th century, the influence of the Timurid 
Gissar region, centered in Gissar, was growing. In 1504-1505 it was occupied 
by nomadic Uzbeks led by Chaghaniyon and Termez Shaibanikhan. Shortly 
after the death of Shaybanikhan in the battle with the Safavids, Termez was 
occupied by Timurid Babur. 
After the establishment of the Soviet government and the national 
demarcation in 1924, the region became part of Uzbekistan. In 1925, 
Surkhandarya district was formed. On March 6, 1941, the Surkhandarya 
region, with Termez as its administrative center, was formed. After the 
declaration of independence on September 1, 1991, Surkhandarya region 
became an integral part of the Republic of Uzbekistan. 
The Surkhandarya oasis is famous for its invaluable contribution to 
human civilization as one of the centers of world civilization. We are now 
getting acquainted with the sights of Surkhandarya. 
1. Pictures of Zarautsoy. The stone carvings in the Zarautsoy gorge are 
rare examples of primitive art. Zarautsoy is located in Sherabad district of 
Surkhandarya region. Discovered in 1912 by I. Fyodorov. More than 200 
paintings belong to the Mesolithic, Neolithic and later periods. The pictures 
are drawn with red angob (ocher) in the form of a contour and shadow. 
Zarautsoy depicts a scene of people hunting wild bulls with the help of dogs.
