Generally, in order to make a quotation sentence into an adverbial sentence, 
the tense in the quotation is postponed for a while, and the person, rhyme, and other 
tenses are changed. 
Let us look at the order of change of times: 
Present Simple Tense and Past Simple Tense 

He said 'my mother is a lawyer’ He said that his mother was a lawyer. 

He said 'I don't like coffee' He said that he did not like coffee. 
Present Continuous Tense and Past Continuous Tense 

He said ‘I am having my hair cut today’ He said that he was having his hair 
cut that day. 
Past Simple Tense and Past Perfect Simple Tense 

He said 'I started out as a teacher' He said that he had started out as a teacher. 
Past Continuous Tense and Past Perfect Continuous Tense 

He said 'I was having a bath at five o’clock yesterday’ He said that he had 
been having a bath at five o’clock the day before. 
Present Perfect Simple Tense and Past Perfect Simple Tense 
He said 'I have passed my driving test.' He said that he had passed his driving test. 
Present Perfect Continuous Tense and Past Perfect Continuous Tense 

He said 'I have been having English lessons for a year.' He said that he had 
been having English lessons for a year. 
Indirect speech is one way of transmitting of someone else's speech, 
characterized by the author's and of the character. Due to its peculiarities, the 
problem of someone else's expression during the development of linguistic thought 
has always been at the center of interests of scientists.
