Past Continuous Tense
The past continuous tense, also known as the past progressive tense, is a verb tense used to describe ongoing actions or events that were in progress in the past.
The past continuous tense formula involves the past tense of to be (was or were) and the present participle of the verb, the –ing form.
There is some examples:
Positive:
- They were watching a movie all night.
- The doctor was sitting in his office.
- The children were playing in the garden.
- Brendon was talking to his class teacher when we were leaving home.
Negative:
- We were not studying English last night.
- They were not watching Harry Potter.
- In the morning our elevator wasn't working.
- I was not preparing for the test though I was scared. 
Question:
- Were you watching TV when I called?
- Was Arnold reading the book?
- Where were you staying when you went to Paris?
- Were you not sleeping yesterday when I came home?
The following marker words will help you determine that you should use Past Continuous in this sentence:
- at 7 a.m.
- all day/night
- all the time 
- at that moment 
- while
- when 
- as
- last week/month/year
- from Monday to Wednesday
There are some verbs that are not used in the long Continuous form. They are called stative verbs. They express thought processes, feelings - what is going on inside of us.
This is what static verbs are like:
- thoughts and opinions: agree, believe, imagine, know, remember, think, understand, etc.
- feelings and emotions: hate, like, love, prefer, want, wish, etc.
- senses and perceptions: appear, feel, hear, look, see, smell, taste, etc.
- possession and measurement: belong, own, possess, weigh, etc.
