of co-ethnic community which can sometimes leave them confused. They
also shared their experiences and struggles to understand the laws as a
foreigner and felt helpless in certain situations. Moreover,
they expressed
their trust over the tax system of South Korea and they confirmed that it is
well-structured system that enables businessmen to deal with tax
procedures smoothly. They also pointed the challenge of getting qualified
lawyers which can be a challenge being a foreigner.
4.13.1 Reasoning behind non-confirmation of Institutional support as a survival
factor
All the participants in the research had various
opinions over the host
country
’
s government support, counselling programs for small business
owners and tax system. Their statements are as follows:
“
Being an immigrant I already don
’
t have a lot of hope to get support
by Korea
’
s government so I know if something goes I will probably
end back in India again. The government
has made tax regulations
pretty much clear which is great and all you need is to hire an
accountant for that. I had no counseling by government or any
institute for my business. I would be glad if there will be such thing.
”
(Case 1)
“
I believe that institutional support is
more common in Europe than
Korea. I never had any guidelines from government or any counseling
institute so all I have achieved so far is the result of my decisions.
My co-ethnic community members helped me to understand few
things but that
’
s all what I had. I am pretty much satisfied by taxing
system because it is very clear and much better than back in Pakistan.
All I care is to think of counseling programs that could have benefited
my business in a better way.
”
(Case 2)
63
“
The tax system in Korea is pretty much
satisfying and I have no
complaints regarding that. I think if there were counseling programs
by government for foreign business owners it could have been better.
The marketing strategies and market needs in Nepal cannot be same
as those in Korea so having access to counseling programs can bring
a clarity in Business model. I wish government take such initiative for
small immigrant business owners.
”
(Case 3)
“
I am satisfied with the tax system because I don
’
t
feel like it
’
s a
burden rather it looks more like a duty. If I had access to counseling
program, I am sure I would have made better choices
”
. (Case 4)
“
The tax back in Uzbekistan is corrupt and it is ruining the economy.
The thing that fascinates me more about Korea is how everybody is
on the same page regarding tax system. Korea lacks counseling
programs which is why many people feel hesitant to start a business
here because of language barriers and failing to understand the
market needs. I will wait for the time when
Korean government will
take into account the importance of small businesses by immigrants
which are building blocks in the economies of bigger countries such
as USA, Canada and UK.
