HASHIMOTO'S THYROIDITIS, 
FERRITIN AND COVID-19

Introduction: 
COVID-19 can cause systemic inflammation (Dufort 
E. M. et al., 2020). Assessment of thyroid function in COVID-19 is not 
yet prescribed (WHO, 2020). But an interrelationship was found between 
COVID-19 pathogenesis and thyroid function (Chen M., Zhou W., Xu W., 
2020). Thyrotropin (TSH), free 3-iodothyronine (fT3) and free thyroxine 
(fT4) levels in individuals with SARS-CoV are below control range. The 
more severe COVID-19, the lower was fT3 (Wang W. et al., 2003). TSH 
and fT3 were lower in the deceased than in the recovered COVID-19 
patients (Chen T. et al., 2020). Currently, there is growing interest to 
the macrophageal protein ferritin (F) as an immunomodulation agent 
(Recalcati S. et al., 2008). Hyperferritinemia in COVID-19 is an important 
link in the mechanisms of cytokine storm (Colafrancesco S. et al., 2020). 
But references on F in autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) are scarce and 
concerning the COVID-19 in AIT patients — any data on F are absent.
Aim: 
To study the F level in those AIT patients who did not suffer from 
COVID-19 and in AIT patients who have undergone the COVID-19, as 
well as to analyze the significance of determining the F level as an indicator 
of the effectiveness of rehabilitation in post-COVID period.
Subjects and methods. 
The follow-up study of the clinical and laboratory 
data from 205 hypothyroid AIT patients, who received Levothyroxine© 
treatment, of which 176 people (40.3 ± 1.1 years old) did not suffer from 
COVID-19, and 29 people (44.3 ± 2.4 years old) who have undergone 
COVID-19 during the period from January 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021. 
The serum levels of fT3, fT4, TSH, cortisol (CS), prolactin (PRL), glucose, 
alanine-aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate-aminotransferase (AST) and 
autoantibodies towards thyroglogulin (TG) and thyroperoxidase (TPO) 
were measured. F level was investigated by immunoturbidimetry, also 
clinical blood analysis and erytrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) was

checked. In 13 female AIT cases, all laboratory parameters were studied 
over time — before and after their suffering from COVID-19. The 
results were statistically processed by precise Fisher's method and cross-
correlative analysis.
