General 

 

 

1.  Chinese students share many concerns, such as the emotional challenges of adjusting to a 

new setting, with other international students but also have specific needs, often related 

to their Confucian heritage. Universities need to explore ways of addressing both the 

general and the specific. 

 

2.  There is an urgent need for both British and Chinese to develop a conscious awareness of 

differences which may lead to cross-cultural misunderstandings.  

 

3.  The International Office needs to take a co-ordinating role both in addressing issues of this 

kind through staff training, and in monitoring the delivery of such provision.  

 

4.  Chinese students need to be introduced to these issues as part of the induction process. 

Information can be shared with the wider student body through Students’ Unions and 

Students’ Services. 

 

5.  The bicultural and bilingual awareness of colleagues who have studied and worked in 

British universities allows them to serve as a very effective bridge between Chinese 

students and British teachers and students. Such colleagues should be involved in the 

planning and delivery of training and induction to ensure that all perspectives are fully 

represented.
