MIXER
In a recording studio, the central device is the mixing desk. This contains
multiple channels or tracks, so that you can record one instrument on

each track and then blend them all together (a process called mixing) to
create the final stereo master.
In life, we are often surrounded by complex soundscapes comprising
many individual sounds. I experience this often when carrying out Sound
Audits of large commercial spaces like shopping centres. The myriad of
individual sound sources may include many people; a range of
mechanical and electrical machinery such as escalators or catering
equipment like coffee machines and dishwashers; and music (all too
often mindlessly deployed and played through low quality sound
systems). The combination of all these sounds, in what are usually large,
reverberant spaces, becomes something we call ‘mall mush’. It takes
conscious effort to disentangle the individual sound sources from the
mix.
If you listen unconsciously, most of the world will be mush. Paying
attention to the individual components of the soundscapes around you is
a wonderful way of engaging more with the world, and the result is that
you live more fully in the present moment. I recommend it.
Exercise: The
Mixer
Whenever you are in a complex soundscape, be it a noisy café or restaurant, a room in
your home or a natural location like a garden or forest, try to identify the individual
sound sources that go-to make-up the ‘mush’.
If you like visualisations, imagine the mixing desk in front of you and bring up the
faders one at a time to focus on each individual sound. If you are primarily auditory,
then simply listen and ask yourself the question: how many sounds can I identify?
The main secret to conscious listening is simply intention.
As you get into the habit of analysing the sounds around you, you will naturally start
to recognise the constituent tracks that go-to make-up any soundscape. This practice
enhances the quality of your listening, as well as enabling you to deal with

counterproductive sounds that might otherwise have remained hidden from you – for
example small hums and buzzes that are largely masked by other, more dense sounds.
