UNCERTAINTY AVOIDANCE INDEX (UAI) AND FIRM-LEVEL DECISION 
TO EXPORT: CROSS-COUNTRY ANALYSIS

Abstract 
Purpose:
This research paper investigates the impact of uncertainty avoidance on firm-level decision to export. 
Design/Methodology/Approach:
We use the data of non-financial firms that are located in 57 countries being from six regions 
of the world during the year of 2017. In addition, we apply data of UAI for each nation by the means of “Hofstede”. Thus, Ordinary 
Least Squares (OLS) Regression and Probit Regression are applied in order to test our hypothesis.
Findings:
The results that are gained from both regressions demonstrate that higher uncertainty avoidance index (UAI) affects 
negatively to the firm-level decision to export. In addition, the degree of this negative effect is relatively higher for large firms than for 
small firms. Therefore, higher UAI has a more influential negative effect on the export of larger firms. Furthermore, our results are 
robust across different sub-samples. 
Originality/Value:
This paper applies country-level information in order to measure the uncertainty avoidance index of each 
country. Moreover, it uses firm-level information for demonstrating the degree of export for different firms separately. Thus, by 
combining these two types of information, we measure the effect of the uncertainty avoidance index on firm-level decisions to export.
