Hyrum W. Smith is a distinguished author, speaker, and businessman. In
1983 he co-founded the Franklin Quest Company to produce the Franklin
Day Planner and train individuals and organisations in the time
management principles on which the planner was based. In 1997 it
became the Franklin Covey Company. As the co-founder of these
companies, he was directly responsible for training over 6 million people
over the course of his career in time management skills and increased
personal productivity: he was the time management guru, or more
accurately put, the life management specialist. He “retired” from Franklin
in 2004 to pursue other interests. For 4 decades, he has been
empowering people to effectively govern their personal and professional
lives, combining wit and enthusiasm with a gift for communicating
compelling principles that incite lasting personal change. Hyrum is the
author of several nationally-acclaimed books, including

Julian Treasure: Do you think listening is really important as a skill for
a leader?
Hyrum Smith: You know, I’m not sure there’s a more important skill for a
leader than listening. In fact, if I had to list the skills and rank the skills
that a leader ought to have, I would put listening at the very top of my
list. It’s a skill that not many leaders have, and it costs them a great deal
of money, it costs them a great deal of productivity. In my opinion,
listening is at the very top of the line.
Julian Treasure: Why is that, why is it so important to listen if you’re a
leader, Hyrum?
Hyrum Smith: Well, if you don’t know what your people are thinking and
what their ideas are, then you’re going to have to come up with all the

ideas to run your company. I mean, I started the Franklin Planner
Company back in 1983, and I discovered very quickly that I did not have
all the skills necessary to take it from my garage to what it became, which
is a billion dollar company on the New York Stock Exchange. I discovered
very quickly that I had some really bright people around me, and we
attracted bright people, and I don’t say this in a bragging way, but I think
one of the reasons we were able to attract bright people is that we not
only listened to people, but we actually implemented their ideas.
There’s so much going on that a leader can never see, and if he or she is
not willing to listen to the people that are working with and for them,
then it is very costly. Just the economic cost of not listening. You’ve got a
guy down on the line who created our binders who came up with an idea
for a new binder. Had we not been willing to listen to him, we’d miss
about a 30 million dollar opportunity, which it turned out to be.
Julian Treasure: And what are the speaking skills that you think would
be helpful for a leader?
Hyrum Smith: The ability to reach into someone so that they feel what
you’re saying is a very special skill. There’s a difference, for example,
between telling and teaching.
Julian Treasure: Mm-hmm.
Hyrum Smith: The great speakers are 
teaching
. They’re not telling,
they’re teaching. In my opinion, the greatest sales people in the world are
teachers. They’re selling their students on an idea and experimenting
with the idea. A leader has to be the quintessential teacher in my opinion.
What the leader needs to do is to make the presentation in such a way
that it goes in through their chest first and then up to the brain. Most
people go in through the intellect. They have 47 slides that they’re going
to show, and all this stuff, and it’s all very intellectual, but they don’t grab

the people’s hearts. If people walk away from a presentation by their
leader, their manager, that hasn’t grabbed them in their heart, their
chest, I don’t care how much data they had, how on line the speech was,
they’ve got to learn to get into their heart.
Great teachers instinctively teach with parables. The modern day word
for parable is an apperception. That means that you teach an idea and
then you share a story that solidifies the idea. That’s like Christ, I hope
you don’t mind me using that example.
Julian Treasure: No, it’s fine.
Hyrum Smith: Christ taught with parables. The reason he was such a
fabulous teacher is because he used stories that the people related to. The
people there understood sheep, and they understood that whole thing.
Great speakers, in my opinion, are great story tellers.
Julian Treasure: Well, I think you’ve raised a fascinating point there,
Hyrum, which is to feel it, then think it, then say it, not just think it.
Hyrum Smith: Right. Absolutely.
Julian Treasure: It kind of wells up from the heart to the head, and
then out of the mouth, which is a tremendous physiological metaphor
really for giving a great speech, and certainly, I know many people have
intellectualised speaking, and it becomes a kind of robotic, mechanical
process. If you can touch, move, and inspire people, and they feel it, then
that connection is invaluable, I think, isn’t it?
Hyrum Smith: Absolutely. The fact is, people may forget what they’ve
heard, forget what they’ve seen, but they never forget what they feel.
