Discussion The novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” was a theoretical basis for this article’s investigation. There are much more elements of realism that is clear by the setting and place of novel, but there are also elements of Romanticism . Some critics as Jane Tompkins says that Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” is conveyed also by the Romanticism. Because it was the period when this novel was written during the end of romantic period and the beginning of Realism.2 That was the main point of the appearance of some elements of Romanticism in the novel. As we know Romanticism focuses on fantastic situations while Realism can reflect real facts and everyday matters. One of the most basic elements of Romantic period is beautifying and idealizing life and characters. On the other hand Realism depicts life in its true colors. Furthermore, Romanticism can add any extra idealizations or imaginations to the characters. Realism reflects imaginative idealization in favor of a close observation of outward appearances. In contrast, Romanticism includes subjectivity and an emphasis on individualism, freedom from rules. In addition it demands solitary life rather than life in society. Moreover the beliefs that imagination is superior to reason and devotion to beauty, love of nature. In addition, Tompkins praised the style so many other critics had dismissed, writing that sentimental novels showed how women’s emptions had the power to change the world for a better. She also said that the popular domestic novels of the 19th century, including Uncle Tom’s Cabin were remarkable for their intellectual complexity, ambition and resourcefulness.3
Anyway in the novel we can mostly observe the elements of Realism rather than Romanticism. For instance let’s take the major characters Tom, Arthur Shelby Eliza Harris like the figures in an allegory do not change or develop, but reveal themselves in response to the demands of the situations. Another element of realism in the novel is the use of violet, the minute descriptions of domestic activity are in fact performed a rhetorical function. Moreover, Uncle Tom’s Cabin exposes a realist narrative representing a national community of historical actors against spiritual intimations. Stowe could portray national realism while her novel utilizes a specific set of realistic elements to arouse use the characteristics and practices of her nation at her particular place and time.
In the other words, we can see some characteristic features of Romanticism in this novel. Harriet Beecher Stowe emphasized that the effects of slavery are just as a tragic for the slave as they are fed up with severe behavior towards them. There are a list of characters for example Tom’s master in New Orleans and Eva’s father. St Clare is a flighty and romantic man who were dedicated to make favor and get pleasure. Another character George Harris who was Eliza’s husband and immersely curious and talented loves his family’s extremely and thus fights for him and his family’s freedom.
Some students might want to compare Stowe to other authors, especially Hawthorne and Emerson. Others might want to think about the text in a more personal way, perhaps looking at issues of race in Uncle Tom's Cabin as a starting point for considering their own experience of race, or asking what contemporary issues they find comparable in importance to the issue of slavery in Stowe's day. Arguments Against Slavery in Uncle Tom’s Cabin Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin presented the argument that Southern slavery was morally wrong.
Result As the result this investigation shows that, there are some elements of Romanticism in the novel that was analyzed and observed above. However there are lack of characteristic features of Romanticism in the novel. Because as we mentioned above this novel was written at the period of transition from Romanticism to realism. And also there are not any ideal scenes which are full of emotional issues, characters indicate what and how they are. They are so simple and naive. By the description of the life of heroes you can know and see the actual real bad conditional life at that time. Another key to the point is that any reader can easily grasp the fundamental meaning of the novel because of its simple and ordinary language.
