Maryland Public Television series Outdoors Maryland

returns in November for its 29th season
OWINGS MILLS, MD – Maryland Public Television’s award-winning series Outdoors Maryland returns with new episodes beginning Tuesday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. on MPT-HD. The series, entering its 29th season, is produced in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and showcases the state’s collection of ecosystems, people and places.
Outdoors Maryland’s November episodes take viewers to scenic locations across the state.

  • Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff travel along the Chesapeake Bay for an up-close look at how the blue crab is faring in the nation’s largest estuary.

  • Archaeologists from Maryland State Highway Administration explore a rural field in Allegany County believed to be part of the historic Braddock Road, associated with the French and Indian War in the mid-1700s.

  • DNR officials tour newly rebuilt back bay islands west of Ocean City in Worcester County, needed as habitats for shore birds such as terns and skimmers.

  • Boat builder Karl Nisson shows how he and several friends in Anne Arundel County are building Smith Island skiffs, originally used by watermen who fished for crabs in the shallow island marshes.

  • Veteran paddlers and environmentalists Don Baugh and Tom Horton take a kayak trip over the “big waters” of the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean to spread the word about climate change – beginning and ending at Sandy Point State Park, with stops including Smith Island in Somerset County.

  • In a look at fishing along the bay, Outdoors Maryland shows where people are fishing and what they are catching and visits Tochterman’s, a century-old Baltimore City tackle shop.

Over the course of nearly three decades Outdoors Maryland has presented hundreds of stories on topics ranging from science-oriented environmental issues to unusual people, animals, and places across the state. The series aims to communicate one message: While Maryland is a small state, it is filled with an array of natural beauty and diverse landscapes.

Outdoors Maryland earned an Emmy® Award earlier this year from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter (NATAS-NCCB) in the “Magazine Program – Program/Special” category. In 28 seasons, the series has earned more than 50 awards including Emmy Awards from NATAS-NCCB.

New episodes of the series air on November 15, 22 and 29 at 7:30 p.m. on MPT-HD. Consult MPT’s schedule online at mpt.org for additional broadcast dates and times.
