Resources and Crafts
Archival evidence attests to the existence of more than a hundred crafts in the 
Khanate of Kokand. The choice of domestic crafts in the khanate evolved in part 
according to the availability of such metals and gemstones as gold, silver, copper, 
iron, lead, turquoise, emeralds, rubies, lapis lazuli, and carnelian. During the khanate 
many miners worked the rich mineral deposits in the Kuramin Mountains,

saltpeter, sulfur, salt, and coal were also extracted. Locally raised larkspur mallow 
and cochineal provided dyes. But research by M. Veniukov has shown that a poor 
knowledge of chemistry, metallurgy, and mechanics meant that the area’s mineral 
wealth came to be much less well-developed than its agricultural potential.

Oil had been known and exploited since ancient times in Kokand, where it served 
primarily as a medicine for rashes. In addition, local manufacturers produced tar 
from it, which they used in making shoes. The mines of the khanate also yielded 
a mineral wax (saryq mum), which was otherwise known only on the shores and 
islands of the Caspian Sea, and in Galicia and Moldova.

in the smelting of excellent iron ore, which they mined in the Temura Mountains”; 
as a result they also made excellent steel and became very skilled gunsmiths.

armaments plant in Andijan.

The shotguns produced in the khanate were mostly 
smoothbore and rarely grooved, while bullets were round and made of lead.

Gunpowder was produced by various one-man enterprises.
There was a high degree of specialization in the crafts of the khanate. Thus, 
the most highly valued thread was produced in Kokand, while Tashkent excelled 
at weaving.

sia, which led to the expansion of that industry. According to the British ambas-
sador in Kashgar, the silk from the factories in Kokand was much better than that 
produced in Kokand’s East Turkestan fabric center, Khotan.

specialization existed in the manufacture of paper, ceramics, exquisite bronze 
water jugs, enamelware, and silver bracelets, which were made

as in medieval 
times—without locks.

An important technical skill practiced across the territory of Kokand was bridge 
building. The enormous irrigation system called for many canals and aryks that 
had to cross roads and paths. Each crossing required a bridge, which constantly 
had to be constructed, maintained, and replaced. These same skills were applied 
to the construction of buildings of every type, which gave rise to a large group of 
professional builders and designers.
A significant number of rural dwellers engaged in domestic crafts. In particular 
villagers spun yarn from cotton, wove cloth, sewed clothes, wove carpets, and 
embroidered scarves, caps and other articles of clothing. They also produced large 
quantities of woven bands (jiyak), baskets, hanging stands for dishware (charkha) 
made of twigs, shovel handles, hoes, and so forth. Many of these products were 
sold in the markets. In addition, nomads and semi-nomads brought raw leather, 
sheep coats and jackets, wool shawls, and carpets to the region’s bazaars.
