The aims of the lesson: To get learners to study the Middle English period and investigate the enrichment of vocabulary after the Norman Conquest
thoroughly; To clarify the origins of ME dialects

-to enable students to investigate the enrichment of vocabulary after the Norman Conquest;
- to clarify the origins of ME dialects;
- to get students to learn about Norman Conquest of England and its effect on linguistic situation;

Phonological Structure of the Middle English Period



1.1. Teaching technology of the lesson

  1. Changes in vowels. Unstressed vowels. Lengthening and shortening of OE vowels in the ME period. Monophthongization of OE diphthongs. Formation of new diphthongs

  2. Spelling changes in ME

  3. ME consonants. Growth of sibilants and affricates. Treatment of fricative consonants in ME


The aims of the lesson: To get learners to study the phonological structure of Middle English period and investigate the changes in vowel system thoroughly; To clarify the changes in ME consonants;
