Reflective essay
In the past, I attended in some english courses and during those english classas I learned more or less about academic english. I don’t know for sure whether those lessons are the same with EAP lessons, but definitely there are some similarities between them. Those english courses were mostly about IELTS preparation such as writing or reading. As we all know, IELTS itself is formal to some extent, especially writing section of IELTS, therefore I was aware of some basic things about EAP before we begin our lessons.
During our EAP lessons, we learned a lot of topics. I can exemplify sentence types, conjunctions, speech types and paraphrasing as the topics we learned at EAP lessons. I feel very happy about learning some of these topics particularly like paraphrasing and in-text citation because they helped us a lot on our assignments. But some topics were not that interesting for me. Those topics were conjunctions, paragraphs and structure of texts. Because I have some knowledge about them to some degrees I didn’t quite like them. However as I said before, some topics taught us at EAP lessons helped us a lot with our assignments on other subjects. Preparing assignments were very difficult at first, duo to the fact that some teachers couldn’t quite explain fully assignment structure to us. But as I was preparing them, I noticed that I have the ability to overcome such problems with getting along with teachers. I was able to ask those teachers whenever I was stuck. Thus, my ideas about some subjects changed completely. For example, Information Technology lessons seemed a bit difficult to learn at first, but after I had got along with our teacher, I found it quite easy to learn.
I can say I benefited a lot from learning EAP. It helped me in many ways, for example, I learned referencing styles which is really important for report-writing. Moreover, EAP lessons were all interesting, so it was quite easy to learn. But somehow I couldn’t get the chance to learn summarizing correctly as a result of my illness. Therefore, I think I need to improve myself on this particular area. Furthermore, when we were given our assignments to write, my shortage of knowledge about summarizing caused some problems. In order to solve them, I spoke with my teacher about it and got some basic information about it, then I managed to overcome it. Although in the past, my writing style wasn’t that good, I can say I got improved very much on it during EAP lessons. Also, my academic vocabulary increased much and this definitely helps me a lot with my assignments.
Apart from me, other students also had problems like this, though most of then faced with problems because of their lack of language efficiency. They tried to handle those problems with reading books about academic writing styles and I can say they managed to achieve some progress. I also did my best to solve my own problems regarding both assignments and my inefficiency with academic english. If I were a teacher, I would give myself 7 out of 10. Because I am trying to cover my weak spots by being active during lessons. Also, my relationship with my coursemates is very strong. I help them if they need any help from me, in return they also give me thier support as much as they can.
In conclusion, I quite like EAP lessons, since they are all about useful and important things for our learning process. On top of that, I built strong bonds with our EAP teacher and I am enjoying from this so far.
I’m really looking forward to improving my academic english in next semester, because as I mentioned above, my academic english isn’t that good. Therefore I want to spend more on this field for the next semester.
