End of General Gordon
(By Lytton Strachey)
Critical Analysis

General Gordon:
Mr. Gordon's full name is Charles George Gordon. He was born in London on 28 January 1833. He is also known as Gordon of Khartoum and Chinese Gordon. Mr. Gordon was a British army officer as well as administer who showcased his skills inside and outside of his country. He glanced the martial action during Crimean war but his militant reputation grew in popularity when his services were offered in China and Sudan. Mr. Gordon was killed during the Fall of Khartoum on 26 January 1885 at the age of 51.
A Brief Look at General Gordon and the Speeding Pace of Life in Lytton Strachey’s Eminent Victorians :
“The End of General Gordon,” the last of Lytton Strachey’s portraits in Eminent Victorians, is a story governed, at its end, by the telegraph. Every turn or advancement of the “plot” is marked by either the presence or absence of a telegram as the situation in the Sudan comes to a head.
Gordon’s expansion of his self, his individuality, into the telegraph becomes a symbol of Strachey’s analysis of Gordon’s larger commitment to a maverick individualism, which Strachey associates with a certain expression of Victorian imperialism and to which Strachey credits his downfall.
It is with General Gordon’s appropriation that the promise of the telegraph’s technology first begins to break down, but its promise of speed by which to counteract the slow machinery of Victorian bureaucracy is completely crushed by the severing of the wire between Cairo and Khartoum (234).
Strachey’s portrait of Gordon ends in a vision of the double-edged power of a rapidly technologizing world. on the other there is the Gordon of the British press, the Gordon celebrated in newspapers, “the national martyr,” who had suffered for the country while Mr. Gladstone had been at a play. The image, though patently wrong according to Strachey, stands as a testament to a modernizing world, a world which expects speed, expects connection, expects a government oriented towards action, not Victorian slowness. Strachey seems to hope, will at least counteract Lord Hartington’s slowness some day.
Gordon's Achievements during his Military Career :
Mr. Garden was professionally devoted his life for the cause of militant activities and he acquired a pretty good name during his military career. In 1863, Mr. Gordon took charge of a Chinese army which was offered by European which was offered by Europeans. The purpose behind this militant group was to subdue the Taiping revolt. Mr. Gordon openly protested against the execution of the rebels but he rejoined his post at the end of 1863. The Taiping revolt was crushed in 1864 and Gordon's refusal to accept huge money offered by the Chinese kingdom spiked his reputation as a hero.
Gordon's fame kept growing during his services in his homeland when he was appointed to protect the Thames forts. He kept himself occupied in social working activities. He visited schools of poor children and he even employed the needy boys in his house which further refined his image. Garden wanted independence of Sudan and to open the communications with the Red Sea but this was a tough task. He asked the Turkish government to assist him but Khartoum (capital of Sudan) was occupied by the Mahdi's groups and Gordon was killed. His murder had a significant impression on the British people and the government of Great Britain announced that day as a national day to mourn his death. Gordon's martial departure brought forth a movement which resulted in the collapse of the first 'imperialism' and of Liberals.
Strachey's Postmortem of Gordon's Character :
Lytton Strachey's Eminent Victorians opened up the secrecy of the Victorian heroes to the public. General Gordon was no exception. On one side, we see Gordon as a true follower of Christianity, studying the Holy Bible all day long. But on the flip side, Strachey shows us a diplomatic person whose personal ego creates a stumbling block for him against his officials which pretty much ends at his death at Khartoum. Instead of softening the already dismal situation at the capital of Sudan, Garden worsened it because of his stern attitude. So, Gordon was a mercenary "who got into and out of conflicts on behalf of various dubious governments".
General Gordon: Who is he? Charles George Gordon is Mr. Gordon's full name. On January 28, 1833, he was born in London. He is sometimes referred to as Chinese Gordon and Gordon of Khartoum. Mr. Gordon, a British army officer and administrator, shown his abilities both inside and outside of his own nation. He caught a glimpse of the combat during the Crimean War, but his reputation as a militant gained notoriety when he offered his services in China and Sudan. At the age of 51, Mr. Gordon perished during the Fall of Khartoum on January 26, 1885. Gordon's Military Career Accomplishments

Mr. Garden basically and professionally dedicated his life to the cause of militant operations, and during his military career, he built himself a respectable reputation. In 1863, Mr. Gordon assumed command of a Chinese army that had been offered by Europeans. This miitant group's goal was to put down the Taiping uprising.Mr. Gordon vocally objected to the rebels being put to death, but he later returned to his employment. In 1864, the Taiping uprising was put down, and Gordon's reluctance to accept enormous compensation from the Chinese dynasty increased his status as a hero. When Gordon was chosen to guard the Thames forts during his duty in his native country, his fame continued to soar. He engaged in social work to keep himself busy. He visited disadvantaged children's schools and even hired the boys in need to work in his home, which improved his reputation.Garden wished for the independence of Sudan and the opening of the Red Sea links, but this was a difficult undertaking. He requested assistance from the Turkish government, but Gordon was slain when the Mahdi's troops took Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. The British people were deeply affected by his assassination, and the government of Great Britain declared that day to be a national day of mourning. Gordon's military departure sparked a movement that led to the demise of both the Liberals and the first "imperialism. Gordon's Character: A Postmortem by Strachey The public was given access to the Victorian heroes' secrecy through Lytton Strachey's Eminent Victorians. Gordon the General was no different. On the one hand, Gordon is portrayed as a devout Christian who spends his days reading the Bible. On the other hand, Strachey portrays a diplomat whose vanity causes him to struggle with his superiors and ultimately results in his death in Khartoum. Due to his severe demeanor, Garden made the already miserable condition in Sudan's capital worse rather than better. Gordon was a mercenary who "entered and exited hostilities on behalf of numerous dubious governments," according to the definition.
