Introduction
As Uzbekistan becomes more open, Uzbeks, especially university students, are embracing the United States and the rest of the Western world. The most effective and beneficial way young Uzbeks are welcoming and engaging with these new relationships is through the English language.
Many young Uzbeks strive to master the English language. At many universities across the capital, Tashkent, many Uzbek students enroll in English language courses. For many, the English language is a break from the past and represents a new future. For young men, English language is a natural step in their business endeavors. As one male student mentioned, “The English language will help me establish strong business connections and make my business wealthier.” For many female students I spoke with they view the English language as a way to gain a professional career in translation or further their higher education pursuits.
Studying English has tangible benefits, which Uzbeks are already using to make a profit. Tourism in Uzbekistan has “nearly increased five-fold over the last three years.” Included in this increase, are tourists from Europe and the United States, and as more Western tourists begin to visit the country, Uzbeks with knowledge of the English language are able to create an advantage for themselves in the tourism industry, especially as tour guides and owners of tour companies.
Playing games is essential in foreign language learning and development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical, social and emotional well-being of learners. It has the paradoxical effect of increasing a student’s attention span and improving the efficiency of thinking and problem-solving, an essential skill when learning a foreign language.
Among numerous sources of learners’ interest in the language learning process, games seem to be very important. Obviously, there are a lot of other sources, such as pictures and stories. Pictures serve as a visual stimulus, while games use both visual and aural channels and activate language production and, sometimes, physical movement.
Learners love to play, and they participate in a game with more enthusiasm and willingness than in any other classroom task.
When playing games, students become more engaged in their learning, taught content is reinforced and class positivity is increased.
Playing games in the classroom increases overall motivation. By playing games, students become more motivated to learn, pay attention and participate in set tasks. Games help students to become a part of a team as well as take responsibility for their own learning. They can also be a great classroom management tool, helping to motivate a class.
Subject of the course paper is devoted to study the role of classroom games in the language teaching and use of games as educational technologies.
