It begins quite harmlessly: Little Nathanael is afraid of the Sandman, as 
children can be. Nathanael is sure that the lawyer Coppelius, who often 
visits his father in the evenings, is the sandman about whom the nanny 
told him terrible things. When the father then dies, for which Coppelius is 
not entirely innocent, it confirms the boy's fears. Years later - Nathanael is 
now a student - he thinks he recognizes Coppelius in a peddler. His fear 
flares up again; he fears that Coppelius could destroy his life with 
demonic powers. And so it happens: Nathanael finds himself pursued at 
every step by the evil Sandman, who is after human eyes. Finally, he falls 
from a tower to his death. Is Nathanael really defenseless victim of an evil 
force? Or is an overly sensitive young man gradually going insane here? 
This question is not resolved. Because ETA Hoffmann, the master of 
fantastic literature, deliberately blurs the boundaries between reality and 
delusion in his story and allows for different interpretations. With this 
narrative style, the "Ghost Hoffmann" is considered a forerunner of 
modern literature.

mistakes for the evil Sandman the nursemaid told him about. When 
Nathanael's father dies in an experiment he was conducting with 
Coppelius, Nathanael attributes demonic powers to Coppelius.
Years later he meets the peddler Coppola, who reminds him of 
Coppelius. Now he thinks he is being pursued by an evil force that is 
destroying his life.
Through binoculars, which he buys from the peddler, he observes a 
beautiful young woman at the opposite window: Olimpia, the daughter 
of Professor Spalanzani.
Nathanael forgets his fiancée Clara, falls in love with the taciturn 
Olimpia and wants to marry her.
However, when he discovers that Olimpia is just a mechanical doll 
constructed by Spalanzani and Coppola, he suffers a nervous 
breakdown.
After a stay in an asylum, Nathanael is considered cured. But when he looks 
through the binoculars again, he loses his nerve and throws himself to his 
death.
Whether Nathanael is really being pursued by Coppelius or has succumbed 
to madness is not entirely clear; both interpretations are possible. The 
fantastic elements and the figure of the overly sensitive artist are typical of 
the Romantic period.

A spooky visitor
Little Nathanael and his siblings often sit with their parents in the evenings 
and listen to their father, who likes to tell stories. On some evenings, 
however, the father is quiet and withdrawn, the mother depressed. Then she 
sends the children to bed early on the grounds that the Sandman is coming. 
Always on these evenings, Nathanael hears footsteps in the stairwell; 
someone is actually coming. The boy never sees this visitor, but he is sure: it 
must be the Sandman! At some point he asks his mother about it, but she 
dismisses it: There is no such thing as a Sandman, that's just a saying.
